Angelo State juniors Ashley Painter and Adree Lakey were honored on Friday as the 2008 Lone Star Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Year, as picked by the league's coaching during their annual meeting.
The Rambelle duo were among five student-athletes in the conference recognized as Painter was named as the Co-Female Track Athlete of the Year and Lakey was honored as Female Field Athlete of the Year in the league.
After winning the 400-meter hurdles at the LSC meet in May, Painter went on to place 10th at the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championships in Walnut, Calif. Painter shared the league award with Winrose Karunde of Abilene Christian.
Lakey scored 38 points at the 2008 LSC Meet, winning the hammer throw, the discus and the shot put while placing second in the javelin. She went on to compete in three events at the national championships, scoring 19 points for the Rambelles. Lakey claimed the national title in the discus, placed fourth in the shot put and fifth in the hammer.
Other award winners announced by the LSC on Friday were Raymond Radway of Abilene Christian as the Male Track Athlete of the Year and ACU's Camille Vandendreissche as the Male Field Athlete of the Year.
