The Angelo State women's basketball team (4-3) snapped a two-game losing skid Thursday night as the 'Belles downed Southwestern Oklahoma, 96-67, at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. The game was the Lone Star Conference crossover opener for both teams.
The 'Belles improved to a perfect 3-0 at home this season after a solid performance on both ends of the floor. ASU shot nearly 50 percent from the field as a team and forced 28 turnovers by the Bulldogs. Sophomore Paige Weishuhn would lead four 'Belles in double figures as she poured in a career-high 29 points. This marked the sixth double-digit game of the year, equaling her total from her entire freshman season.
With the game tied, 8-8, with just under 16 minutes left in the opening half, the 'Belles used an 11-0 run thanks to seven points from Weishuhn to take control of the contest early on. The 'Belles would maintain a small lead for most the of the half before ending the period on a 24-12 run to grab a 10-point lead at the break, 42-32.
ASU's momentum carried over into the second has as the 'Belles took their first 20-point lead of the young season, 57-36, with 14:54 remaining on a layup by sophomore Jasmine Fuller. It took just over four minutes for the 'Belles to extend their lead to 30 points as freshman Lindsey Youngblood would give ASU a 69-39 cushion with 10:36 left in the contest on a three-pointer. ASU would call off the dogs for the final minutes of the game, and still held on for the 29-point win.
Weishuhn scored 24 of her 29 points in the first half to lift ASU to the early lead. She hit 10-of-14 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 shots from three-point range, and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Senior Casie Adams ended the night with 13 points, sophomore Jasmine Fuller added a career-best 11 points and junior Camille Perkins had 10 points. Perkins led the 'Belles with five rebounds and four assists while Youngblood had a team-best three steals. Freshman Ashley James also had four assists for ASU.
ASU hit 35-of-71 shots (49.3%) from the field as the 'Belles recorded their highest output in nearly five years. It was the most points by an ASU women's team since a 100-98 double-overtime victory at SWOSU in the 2004-05 season. The 'Belles shot 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from three-point range and hit 18-of-28 shots (64.3%) from the free-throw line. ASU out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 45-38.
The Bulldogs (0-6) got a team-high 14 points from Chelsey Dillon while Natasha Brown added 11 points. SWOSU shot 38.7 percent from the floor (24-of-62), hit 6-of-24 shots from three-point range (25%) and made 13-of-20 free-throw attempts (65%). Dillon pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
The 'Belles remain home this weekend as they host Cameron in LSC crossover play. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Junell Center.
