The Angelo State women's basketball team (8-7, 1-0 LSC South) used late free throws to secure a 62-58 home win over Midwestern State Wednesday night in the start of Lone Star Conference South Division play for both teams.
ASU would snap a streak of three straight division-opening losses, dating back to the 2005-06 season, as junior
Camille Perkins scored a game-high 16 points for the 'Belles. Senior
Casie Adams would come off the bench for 12 points and added a team-best 11 rebounds for her first career "double-double".
The 'Belles scored the first six points of the game and led by as many as seven points on two occasions to take early control of the contest. MSU would find a rhythm midway through the half and would eventually take a four-point lead, 28-24, with 3:44 left before the break. But, the 'Belles would finish the half the same way they opened, using a 6-0 run to regain a four-point advantage at the break, 32-28. ASU would shoot 42 percent from the field as a team over the first 20 minutes and forced nine first-half turnovers by the Mustangs.
The visiting Mustangs would open the second half on an 8-1 run to regain a three-point lead, 36-33, with 18:28 remaining in the contest. MSU would extend its lead to as many as five points before the 'Belles would use a 6-0 run, which included a pair of fast break layups by freshman
Ashley James and Perkins, to grab a 43-42 advantage with 11:53 left.
The two team teams would trade leads on 10 occasions in the second half alone, in addition to five ties, before the 'Belles would take four-point lead, 54-50, after a pair of free throws by Adams and a back-door layup by Perkins, thanks to a pass from Adams, with 4:51 remaining. ASU would never trail again, holding off every attempt by the Mustangs in the final minutes. Adams would drain two free throws with two seconds left to lift the 'Belles back to the final four-point advantage.
The 'Belles shot just 37 percent (22-of-60) from the field, hitting just 2-of-15 shots (13%) from three-point range, and shot 64 percent (16-of-25) from the free-throw line in their third straight win since the start of new year. ASU would outrebound the Mustangs, 47-45.
For MSU (6-8, 0-1 LSC South), Savannah Carver would score a team-best 15 points, hitting three three-pointers for the Mustangs. A Pair of MSU players had "double-doubles" in the loss as Jazman Patterson had 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while Nolisha Markham added 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Mustangs shot 29 percent (17-of-59) from the field, hitting 6-of-15 (40%) from behind the arc, and hit 18-of-27 shots (67%) from the free-throw line.
The 'Belles return to action Saturday when they visit Tarleton State. Tip-off is 5 p.m. at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville.
