'Belles drop season finale

The Angelo State women's basketball team (12-14, 5-7 LSC South) had its season come to a close Saturday night after a 62-49 home loss to No. 25-ranked Tarleton State.

With a berth in next week's Lone Star Conference Tournament on the line, the 'Belles came out strong in the opening half and looked to on their way to punching their ticket to an 11th straight postseason. However, the top defense in LSC clamped down in the second as the TexAnns ended ASU's season and snapped a nine-year stretch of trips to the LSC Tournament.

Tarleton State took an early 4-2 lead but the 'Belles would use runs of eight and 11 points to take control of the contest. ASU led by as many as 13 points in the opening period, shooting 57 percent from the field, before grabbing a 32-26 lead at the break as the TexAnns ended the half on a 9-3 run.

The TexAnns would score the first four points of the second half which led to a 12-2 run to take their first lead since the 18:50 mark of the first half. ASU would respond with four quick points of its own to knot the game, 38-38, with 14:54 left on a layup by freshman Leah LeMaire. However, TSU took back the lead on a free throw by Brittnie Haley and extend its lead to as many as six points on two occasions over the next six minutes. Tarleton State would end the game on an 12-5 run to secure the 13-point victory.

Weishuhn ended the night with a team-high 14 points while junior Alix Flores added 10 points. Junior Camille Perkins added nine points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds. After a hot-shooting opening half, the 'Belles hit just 7-of-23 shots (30%) from the field over the final 20 minutes, going 0-for-5 from three-point range in the second half. On the night, ASU shot 44 percent (20-of-46) from the floor, hitting 3-of-11 shots (27%) from behind the arc, and shot 60 percent (6-of-10) from the foul line.

For Tarleton State (22-5, 9-3 LSC South), Shelby Adamson scored a game-high 15 points to lead three TexAnns in double figures. Kelsey Benford had 12 points and Haley added 11. TSU shot 44 percent (28-of-64) from the field, hitting 3-of-6 shots (50%) from three-point range, and shot just 38 percent (3-of-8) from the free-throw line. The TexAnns out-rebounded ASU, 37-30.
