Tracksters hit McMurry

With a large contingent competing at the Texas Relays in Austin this week, the remainder of the Angelo State men's and women's track & field teams made the short trip to Abilene for the McMurry Relays Thursday.

Riding a strong performance from their distance runners, the Rambelles placed fifth with 60 points while the Rams placed seventh with 45 points. Host McMurry won both the men's and women's team titles.

Freshman Emeline Crutcher was the only individual champion for the Rambelles as she took first place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 20:17.24. Sophomore April Phillips placed fifth in the event (20:47.36), freshman Jessica Boudreau sixth (20:53.82) and freshman Kami Orsak 12th (22:06.41).

Crutcher also sparked the Rambelles with a sixth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:11.91. Phillips placed 13th (5:25.45) in the 1,500 while Boudreau was 16th (5:32.85). Freshman Jasmine Clarke placed second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:27.99.

In the sprints, freshman Theresa Sue placed second in the 400-meter dash (59.27) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (25.90). Junior Makayla Myers was the Rambelles' top finisher in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.44 while placing ninth in the 200 (26.42). Freshman Danielle Finley placed 12th in the 100 (12.68) and 20th in the 200 (27.47). Sophomore Shelly Diggs placed 16th in the 400 (1:03.69) and 26th in the 200 (28.33). Sophomore Carmen Herrera placed 18th in the 400 (1:04.06).

In the field events, Herrera placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 35-1.75 while freshman Brittany Clarke placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 16-8.75.

The Rambelles ran two squads in the 4x400-meter relay, with the "A" squad placing first with a time of 3:57.48 while the "B" squad placed fifth in a time of 4:16.37.

For the men, senior Nate Gonzales gave the men their only individual title Thursday as he won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:21.53. Gonzales added a 19th place finish in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:23.89.

The Rams did most of their damage Thursday in the throws. Freshman Jeremy Gutierrez placed fifth in the javelin (175-11), 11th in the discus (142-2), 13th in the hammer (115-11) and 15th in the shot put (41-5.75). Sophomore Nick Alejandro finished seventh in the discus (142-2) and 10th in the shot put (47.5.25).

In the springs, freshman Guy Henry placed 11th in the 100 in a time of 10.88, while adding a 25th place finish in the 200 (22.73). Senior Sam Gallander placed seventh in the 400 (49.53) and 13th in the 200 (22.27). Freshman Hewitt Holmes placed 22nd in the 100 (11.29) and freshman Robert Malczewski was 23rd in the event (11.58). Malczewski also placed 15th in the 110-meter hurdles (16.63). Junior Phillip Gonzalez placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (54.77) and freshman Jeffrey Jones was fourth (55.08).

Freshman Nick Wargo recorded a pair of top 10 finishes in distance events, placing ninth in the 1,500 (4:14.58) and 10th in the 5,000 (16:18.86). Senior Steven Gundy paced the Rams in the 800 with a time of 2:01.13 while sophomore Clinton Bippert placed 16th (2:06.75). The Rams had three other finishes in the 1,500, with senior Shannon Cunningham placing 10th (4:14.71), sophomore Randal Guinn 25th (4:29.55) and Bippert 33rd (4:49.38). Cunningham also placed second in the steeplechase (10:34.85).

The Rams also ran two 4x400 relays, with the "A" squad placing fifth (3:20.88) and the "B" squad placing seventh (3:27.84).
