The Angelo State women's soccer team has been selected to make its sixth-straight postseason appearance according to the 2008 Lone Star Conference preseason poll released by the league office Thursday afternoon.
The Rambelles finished fifth in the poll, receiving a total of 182 points on 27 ballots that were cast by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives throughout the conference.
First-year head coach
Travis McCorkle inherits a squad that returns 19 players from a team that finished 2007 with an 8-8-3 record and qualified for the league's postseason tournament as the No. 3-seed.
Central Oklahoma, the three-time defending regular season champions, grabbed the top spot in the poll with 21 out of 27 first-place votes and 290 points. The Bronchos are riding 35-match conference unbeaten streak (33-0-2) and have not lost a conference match since falling to the Rambelles in San Angelo in 2004.
Midwestern State finished second in the poll with one first-place vote and 255 points. West Texas A&M, who ousted ASU from last season's tournament, garnered 4 first place votes and 237 points to grab the third spot. Texas A&M-Commerce received the remaining first-place vote and tallied 203 points to finish ahead of the Rambelles in fourth.
Rounding out the poll was Texas Woman's in sixth with 163 points, Abilene Christian in seventh with 141 points, Northeastern State in eight with 107 points, East Central in ninth with 77 points, Eastern New Mexico with 73 points and Southwestern Oklahoma State with 54 points.
The league also handed out preseason honors for three individuals. West Texas A&M's Elisabeth Markussen was named Offensive Player of the Year, Central Oklahoma's Alli Miller was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year and Northeastern State's Patricia Nardy earned Goalkeeper of the Year acclaim.
The Rambelles open the 2008 season in St. Joseph's, Mo., against Emporia State on Friday, Aug. 29, at the Missouri Western State tournament. ASU's home opener is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, against Incarnate Word.
