Men, Women both second at UNT

The Angelo State men's and women's cross country teams both placed second as the two squads competed at the North Texas Invitational in Denton.

The Rams scored 58 points hold off third-place Northwood Friday night. The ASU men were paced by a trio of runners - Shannon Cunningham, Nate Gonzales and Brian Carroll, who placed 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively. All three Rams finished the eight kilometer race in 26:53. Isac Valdez placed 18th (28:11), Robert Hummingbird was 19th (28:17), Nick Wargo was 27th (29:20) and Hogan Campbell was 26th (31:19).

Tarleton State claimed the men's title, finishing the event with 18 points, placing five of the top six scorers. Northwood was third with 59 points and the University of Dallas was fourth with 111 points.

On the women's side, Brittney Heath led the Rambelles with a third-place finish, running the five-kilometer race in a time of 19:24. Emeline Crutcher was close behind in fourth place (19:27) while Paige Massingill was also in the top 10 in eighth place (19:49). Jessica Boudrea placed 15th (20:14), Alyssa Priest was 16th (20:29), Kami Orsak was 28th (21:49), Brittney Welchon was 34th (22:35) and Jennifer Flanery was 35th (22:56).

Host North Texas won the women's title, ending the race with 32 points. ASU was second with 46 points and Louisiana-Monroe was third with 81 points.

The two teams will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 13, as the Rams and Rambelles host the ASU Blue & Gold Classic. The women's 5K begins at 5:10 p.m. with the men's five-mile race to follow at the San Angelo Regional Airport.
