Five 'Belles honored by LSC

Five members of the Angelo State volleyball team were recognized Wednesday night as the Lone Star Conference released its postseason awards. The announcement came at a banquet on the eve of the LSC Volleyball Tournament in Canyon.

Senior Alaina Sivells and freshman Chelsea Gibson were each named to the LSC's first team while freshman Caroline Cleveland earned honorable mention recognition. Gibson was also named the LSC's Freshman of the Year.

Sivells, a two-time LSC Offensive Player of the Week this season, ranks in the top 10 in the LSC in three statistical categories entering this weekend's postseason tournament. The Marble Falls native sits second in the league with 3.76 points per set, fourth with 3.22 kills per set, and eighth with 0.80 blocks per set. Sivells adds a .272 hitting percentage. She was a second all-league selection as a junior and earned honorable mention honors as a sophomore.

Gibson, native of Spring Branch, ranks second in the LSC with a .321 hitting percentage, the highest by a 'Belle since 1989, and ranks ninth in the league with 0.79 blocks per set and 10th with 3.43 points per set. Gibson is second on the team with 2.96 kills per set.

Sivells and Gibson become the first ASU players to earn first team All-LSC honors since 2004. Only one other team had more first team selections this season, regular-season champion West Texas A&M with three picks. Abilene Christian, the regular-season runner-up, and Texas A&M-Commerce also had two selections to the 14-person first team.

Cleveland, an Abilene native, sits sixth in the LSC with 0.35 service aces per set. She ranks third on the team with 2.15 kills per set and adds 2.54 digs per set, ranking her fourth on the team.

Senior Kimber Duncan was selected to the league's all-academic team. Sivells and sophomore Kayla Smith were each named to the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

The 'Belles open the LSC Tournament Thursday as they face Texas Woman's in the first round. First serve is 12 p.m. at the WTAMU Fieldhouse.
