The Angelo State volleyball team (19-13) had revenge on its mind Thursday as the 'Belles opened the Lone Star Conference Tournament against Texas Woman's. ASU avenged a three-set loss to Texas Woman's in the regular season with a five-set win over the Pioneers, 25-12, 15-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-10.
Freshman
Caroline Cleveland had her best match of the season Thursday as she recorded a season-best 22 kills and added six digs, four blocks and three aces to lift the 'Belle to their first LSC Tournament win since 2004. Freshman
Katie Coleman would add 12 kills while senior Alaina Sivells pitched in 10 kills to round out the 'Belles in double digits.
With the fifth set tied, 10-10, Cleveland would use back-to-back kills to lift the 'Belles to the final five points of the match and to their seventh straight victory. After inconsistent play in the previous four games, ASU did not commit an error in the fifth set as the 'Belles used eight kills and boasted a .667 hitting percentage in the final stanza. Freshman
Chelsea Gibson, who missed the last two matches of the regular season due to injury, entered the fifth set after missing the first four games and had two blocks, a kill, an assist and a dig to help lift ASU to its eighth five-set win of the season.

Kimber Duncan would end the contest with match-high 23 digs while freshman

Alex Allard added 25 assists in ASU's 6-2 offense. The 'Belles would out-block TWU, 12-6, getting six blocks from Coleman.
The No. 3-seeded 'Belles took little time to seemingly take control of the contest as they tied their best margin of victory in a set this season with a 25-12 opening-set win. Cleveland had four kills and all three of her service aces as ASU cruised to the early lead. The 'Belles hit .281 as a team, compared to -.067 by sixth-seeded TWU, in the opener.
The second set was a different story as TWU committed just one error rebounded for a double-digit win of its own. The Pioneers would hit .400 and took advantage of nine 'Belle error to even the match, 1-1. Cleveland would add four more kills, but the 'Belles hit just .156 as a team in the second set.
Cleveland would rally the 'Belles in the third set as the Abilene native belted eight kills as ASU pulled away late to take a 2-1 lead in the match. ASU led the entire set, but the Pioneers would climb within one point, 12-11, before the 'Belles would make a run. ASU scored seven straight points, thanks to two kills and a block by Coleman. The 'Belles hit .275 in the set while TWU hit just .111.
The Pioneers would even the match, 2-2, after taking a four-point win in the fourth set. TWU would hit .303 in the set as a team, compared to .222 by the 'Belles. Coleman would continue her strong play as she had five kills in the set for ASU, but the 'Belles would make four service errors which would be the difference in the set.
Texas Woman's closes out its season 16-17.
ASU advances to the LSC semifinals Friday when the 'Belles will play rival Abilene Christian. That match is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the WTAMU Fieldhouse. With a win in the semis, ASU would secure its second consecutive 20-win season and advance to the LSC finals for the first time since 1993.
