'Belles fall in LSC semis

The Angelo State volleyball team (19-14) advanced to the Lone Star Conference semifinals for the first time in five years and were mere points away from the tournament finals, falling in five games to rival Abilene Christian Friday. The Wildcats (29-5) downed ASU, 25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-9, to advance to Saturday's LSC title game.

The freshman led the 'Belles but they couldn't overcome a big deficit in the fifth set as ASU close out the season with its 11th five-set match of the year, falling to 8-3 in such matches. Freshman Katie Coleman ended the match with 13 kills while fellow freshman Caroline Cleveland recorded her seventh "double-double" of the season with 12 kills and a team-high 17 digs. Freshman setter Alex Woolsey also had a "double-double", her 10th of the season, with 22 assists and 10 digs.

The opening set was rough for the 'Belles as ASU hit just .027 as a team with nine kills and eight errors in the game. Except for a 1-0 ASU lead, the Wildcats never trailed in the set, but ASU did close within one point, 14-13, before ACU pulled away for the five-point win. ACU hit .237 as a team in the set, amassing 15 kills to just six errors.

The 'Belles would take an early two-point lead over ACU in the second set maintain a slim lead for the majority of the game before taking a their first three-point lead, 17-14, on a kill by Coleman. Coleman would later extend ASU's lead to five points, 22-17, on a service ace to lift the 'Belles to the four-point win to even the match, 1-1. The 'Belles would hit .257 in the set thanks to five kills from Coleman while ACU hit .219.

ASU would carry its momentum into the third set, taking three-point on four occasions early, the latest at 13-10, before the Wildcats would make a charge. ACU would score five straight points to take a 15-13 lead and look to be in control of the set before a three-point run by the 'Belles to grab another three-point lead, 21-18. ACU would use a timeout before scoring two straight points to cut the 'Belle lead back to one point, 21-20, but ASU would close out the set with four of the final five points in the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Cleveland and fellow freshman Emily Booth had four kills each in the game as the 'Belles hit .292, compared to just .162 by ACU.

The two teams would trade blows in the fourth set before ACU would take the first three-point lead by either team at 11-8. The 'Belles would battle back to knot the game, 14-14, on an Wildcat hitting error and then take back the lead on a block by Booth and senior Alaina Sivells, cappting a 4-0 run by ASU. The Wildcats would regain a two-point cushion, 18-16, before the 'Belles run off three-straight points, capped by an ace by senior Kimber Duncan, to retake the lead, 19-18. However, ACU would score seven of the last nien points, including the final three points to force the fifth set. The Wildcats would hit .273 in the set, compared to .146 by ASU.

With the score tied 2-2 in the fifth set, the Wildcats would run off six straight points to take a commanding 8-2 lead. The 'Belles would only get as close as four points, 8-4 and 9-5, but would not get any close as ASU dropped the deciding game by six points. ASU hit -.056 in the set while the Wildcats hit .118.

For ACU, Shawna Hines and Jennie Hutt each had 13 kills while Jordan Schilling added 12 kills. Setter Ijeoma Moronu had 53 assists while libero Kelsie Edwards had a match-high 24 digs.
