The Angelo State women's basketball team (8-8, 1-1 LSC South) had its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday as the 'Belles dropped a 61-35 decision at Tarleton State in Stephenville.
The 'Belles shot just 22 percent from the field, hitting 11-of-50 shots from the floor, and made just 1-of-8 shots (13%) from three-point range, as ASU was held to its third lowest offensive output in school history. The 35 points by ASU Saturday was the fewest by the program since a 74-32 against Stephen F. Austin during the 1976-77 season. The 'Belles were limited to 32 points during that inaugural season.
No 'Belle reached double figures as junior Camille Perkins had a team-high nine points. Senior Lindsey Leatherman-Schaertl had six points and freshman Leah LeMaire added five points. Perkins and senior Casie Adams each pulled down a team-best six rebounds. The 'Belles hit 12-of-23 shots (52%) from the free-throw line.
The host TexAnns (13-2, 1-0 LSC South) scored the first five points of the game and never trailed in the contest. With 7:45 left in the first half, Leatherman would get the 'Belles within two points, 16-14, with ASU's only three-pointer of the night. However, TSU would end the half on a 17-5 run to grab a 33-19 lead at the break.
The 'Belles would nearly trim the deficit to single-digits midway through the first half as a layup by freshman Lindsey Youngblood cut the TSU lead to 11 points, 43-32, with 10:44 remaining. But the 'Belles would manage just there more points over the remainder of the game as TSU ended the contest on an 18-3 run.
TSU shot 40 percent (21-of-52) from the field and hit just 1-of-4 (25%) shots from three-point range. The TexAnns hit 18-of-25 shots (72%) from the free-throw line and out-rebounded ASU, 40-34. Shelby Adamson scored a game-high 24 points while JoAnne Jones added 18 points and a game-best 14 rebounds.
The 'Belles return to action Wednesday night when the visit Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at the Steinke Center in Kingsville.
