Rams edged in OT

The Angelo State men's basketball team (9-8, 1-2 LSC South) nearly overcame an 11-point halftime deficit before falling, 97-91, in overtime at Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night in Kingsville.

Junior LaMarshall Corbett topped the 30-point barrier for the seventh time this season as he scored a game-high 31 points to lead three Rams in double digits. Corbett hit 7-of-12 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line before fouling out in the extra stanza. Senior Stavon Williams added 21 points and senior Derrick Webster scored 12 points. Webster and fellow senior Shavar Burch both led ASU with nine rebounds each.

Trailing 46-35 at the break, the Rams pecked away at the TAMUK lead in the second half before knotting the game, 67-67, on a layup by senior Johnny Barnes with 8:06 remaining. The host Javelinas would respond with a 13-6 spurt over a span of 2:52 to regain a seven-point advantage, 80-73, with just under four minutes left in regulation. Corbett would drain his final three-pointer of the night with 10 seconds left to knot the game, 84-84, and force overtime. The Rams would shoot 58 percent (15-of-26) from the field in the second half.

The Javelinas scored the first five points of the extra period and never trailed as they handed ASU is second overtime loss of the season. TAMUK was 4-of-7 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in overtime.

The Rams shot 50 percent (30-of-60) as a team on the night, hitting 7-of-17 shots (41%) from three-point range, and hit 24-of-30 shots (80%) from the free-throw line. ASU dominated the boards, out-rebounded the Javelinas, 42-26.

TAMUK (11-7, 1-2 LSC South) got 29 points from Flavio Milam as he led four Javelinas in double-figure scoring. Milam hit 11-of-20 shots from the field (3-of-6 from three-point range) and was 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Teammate Antwan Mullins added 22 points, thanks to 12-of-13 accuracy from the charity stripe. Milam and Mullins both grabbed a team-best five rebounds. Mullins also led TAMUK with six assists.

The Rams return to action Saturday night as they host rival Abilene Christian. Tip-off is 8 p.m. at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
