The Angelo State men's basketball team (12-8, 4-2 LSC South) picked up its third straight win Saturday night as the Rams escaped Eastern New Mexico with a 92-88 victory in Portales, N.M.
Junior LaMarshall Corbett led four Rams in double figures as he scored 27 points as ASU picked up its fifth straight win over the Greyhounds. Corbett made 5-of-15 shots from the field, 3-of-9 from three-point range, and hit 14-of-15 shots from the free-throw line. Senior Derrick Webster added 16 points, senior Johnny Barnes had 15 points and senior Stavon Williams scored 11 points.
The host Greyhounds took early control of the contest before ASU could get into a rhythm. The Rams took their first lead of the night with 15:46 left in the first half as Corbett drained the first of his three-pointers to give ASU a 12-11 advantage. The two teams would trade leads over the next two minutes before the Rams would use an 9-0 run to seemingly take control of the game. ASU led by as many as 13 points in the first half before grabbing a 57-48 lead at the break.
ENMU would use eight-point run to open the second half as the Greyhounds quickly climbed within one point, 57-56, with 17:47 remaining. Later in the half, Corbett would score on three straight Rams possession to help ASU extend a one-point lead to a seven-point cushion, 73-66, with 11:00 remaining.
The Greyhounds would again claw back into the contest as they knotted the game, 76-76, with just over eight minutes to play. ENMU would even re-take the lead two minutes later, 81-79, on a pair of free throws by Reggie Nelson. The Greyhounds would lead by as many as four points before ASU battled back as Barnes gave the Rams an 85-84 lead with 4:40 remaining.
ENMU regained the lead with 2:32 left as Victor Reid broke open a tie game with 1-of-2 free throws, giving the Greyhounds a 78-77 advantage. Barnes would give the Rams back the lead on their next possession as he put back a missed jumper by senior Shavar Burch. The Rams would add a pair of free throws by Williams with 34 seconds left and another foul shot by Burch with one second on the clock to ice the game.
The Rams shot 44 percent (30-of-68) from the field, hitting 5-of-18 shots (28%) from behind the arc, and shot 68 percent (27-of-40) from the free-throw line on the night. Senior Antwon Williams led the Rams with a game-high eight rebounds as ASU dominated the rebounding battle, 45-32.
For ENMU (7-12, 2-3 LSC South), Nelson scored a game-high 31 points to spark three Greyhounds in double figures. Nelson 8-of-17 from the field, 2-of-5 from three-point range, and hit 13-of-14 free throws. Reid added 16 points and Tyler Jefferson scored 12 points. Nelson also led ENMU in rebounding with seven boards. The Greyhounds shot 46 percent (26-of-56) from the floor, hitting 6-of-15 shots (40%) from three-point range, and shot 77 percent (30-of-39) from the charity stripe.
The Rams return to action in seven days as they host Arlington Baptist in non-conference action Saturday, Feb. 6. Tip-off is 7 p.m. at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
