Fort Lewis Too Much for 'Belles

The Angelo State women's basketball team was handed its fourth loss to start the season Friday night as the 'Belles fell at Fort Lewis, 87-61, in Durango, Colo.

The Skyhawks (2-0) shot 56 percent from the field and forced 34 ASU turnovers as they nearly led wire-to-wire in the victory. FLC grabbed its first lead at 6-4 with 16:34 left in the first half and never looked back, grabbing a 16-point lead on two occasions in the first half before taking a 51-36 advantage at the break.

Fort Lewis would take its first 20-point lead with 16:11 left in the game on a three-pointer by Erin Kerr to give the Skyhawks a 60-39 cushion. FLC never led by less than that margin for the remainder of the game.

Junior forward Lindsey Leatherman led the 'Belles with 10 points, hitting 3-of-4 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Sophomore Alix Flores came off the bench for seven points while senior center Ann Parks, senior forward Leina Braxton and freshman center Paige Weishuhn each added six points. Four different 'Belles had a team-best three rebounds.

ASU shot just 38 percent from the field, hitting just 21-of-55 shots, while connecting on just 4-of-17 (23.5 %) from three-point range. The 'Belles shot 83 percent (15-of-18) from the free-throw line and out-rebounded FLC, 36-30.

Alison Rosel scored 21 points to lead four Skyhawks in double figures. Rosel shot 10-of-14 from the field and added a game-high six rebounds.

The 'Belles will wrap up the weekend at 5 p.m. (Central) Saturday night when then face Mesa State in their final game of the Fort Lewis Classic.
