The Angelo State baseball team (29-15, 22-12 LSC) got back-to-back complete games from Kenny Elkind and Michael Gunter in defeating Southwestern Oklahoma (26-16, 20-14 LSC), 7-3 and 12-2, Friday at Foster Field.
Elkind tossed his fourth complete game of the season in game one of the doubleheader scattering eight hits and giving up three runs, one earned, while striking out a career-high 10 batters and walking none to improve to 6-2 on the year. Gunter, who pitched only three innings last season, tossed his first complete game since the 2007 South Central Regional against Montevallo, giving up two runs, none earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks to raise his record to 3-0 on the season. Game one saw the Rams fall behind in the top of the first when Kenny Hare and Morgan Marr led off the game for the Bulldogs with back-to-back doubles to put SWOSU up, 1-0. That was the only lead for the Bulldogs in the game as the Rams came back in their first at bat with four runs on three hits off of Aldemar Betrian, the first runs Betrian had surrendered in three outings, with the big blow coming off the bat of Austin Lasprilla, a one out two-run single which capped off the scoring in the inning. ASU built the lead in the second to 6-1 with two more runs on a single by Chris Adamson and a sacrifice fly by Travis Lites. After SWOSU cut the lead to 6-3 with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings, the Rams closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth when Lasprilla drove home Lites with double to left centerfield. In game two, the Rams jumped on SWOSU starter Kevin Hyde in the second inning with three runs on a two-run double by Brian Rasberry and RBI-single by Trey Carter. The Bulldogs cut trimmed the margin to 3-2 with unearned runs in the third and fourth innings but the Rams began to put the game away in the bottom of the fourth with a five-run outburst highlighted by Jason Morriss' three-run double giving the Rams an 8-2 advantage. ASU ended the game in the seventh with four runs, two coming on a two-run home run by Lasprilla, his fourth of the season, which just got into the bullpen in left and Morriss' two-run walk off blast over the left centerfield fence, his eighth in 2009. Lasprilla finished the twin bill going 4-for-6 with the home run, one double, three runs scored and five RBI while Morriss was 3-for-8 with his home run, a double, four runs scored and five RBI. Adamson picked up two more hits in the nightcap and extended his hitting streak to 12 games while Carter was 4-for-8 in the two games with three runs scored and two RBI. The Rams and Bulldogs conclude their four-game series Saturday with another doubleheader at Foster Field. The Rams will honor nine seniors who will be playing their final LSC games at home in a ceremony before game one. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. |
