Statesmen Blank Rams, 6-0, To Sweep Series

The No. 13-ranked Delta Statesmen used three pitchers to limit the Angelo State baseball team (0-3) to eight hits in shutting out the Rams, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at Foster Field and sweep the three-game series.

The Rams had several opportunities to break through but were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Four times on the afternoon the Rams had a runner on third and could not get home the run. The Rams put the lead off hitter on in each of the first four innings off of Delta State starter Brett Durand and could not make a dent in the scoreboard.

Delta State got the scoring started in the top of the third when centerfielder J.T. Taylor scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Ronnie Hawley. The second run of the inning came when shortstop Devin Goodwin raced home following a wild pitch by Ram starter Joe Key. Leftfielder Chris Weast would drive home the Statesmen's third run of the game in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right plating Hunter Jobes who had tripled. Delta State would add another run in the sixth and two more in the eighth for the final margin.

Durant was nearly flawless on the mound for the Statesmen in getting the win, surrendering six of the eight Rams hits while striking out five and walking two. Weast came in to pitch two-hit ball in the seventh and eighth. Cesar Rodriguez pitched the ninth facing four batters, walking one and striking out two.

Key (0-1) took the loss for the Rams going six innings before having to leave after taking a line drive off his shin in the top of the fifth. Key finished the game allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts. Key did not walk a single batter on the afternoon. Freshman Jeremy Tietze pitched the seventh and eight giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits, walking one and striking out one. Senior Elliot Love came on in the ninth allowing one hit.

Sophomore Clay Calfee led the Rams at the plate going 3-for-4. Junior Steven Allred went 1-for-1 and was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning, opening up a gash on his chin which forced him to leave the game in the sixth.

The Rams return to Foster Field on Friday, Feb. 9, when they host the No. 8-ranked Hornets of Emporia State in the first of a three-game series. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
