Travis McCorkle has developed a pattern of leading the Angelo State soccer program to places its never been before.
A proven winner after six seasons as the head soccer coach at ASU, McCorkle has led the Rambelles to four straight trips to the postseason and five 10-plus win seasons. He directed the program to its first Lone Star Conference Championship in 2013 after guiding the Rambelles to their first NCAA Division II Soccer Tournament in the 2010 season. He was named the LSC's Co-Coach of the Year after the 2013 season where ASU claimed a share of the conference title and were the top seed in the LSC tournament.
A Glenwood Springs, Colo. native, he has guided the Rambelles to a 61-44-11 overall record and a 29-20-6 Lone Star Conference mark at ASU. Thirty ASU players have earned All-LSC postseason recognition, including first-team selections of Maggie Schaffer and Sierra Anderson after the 2013 season and Brandie DeBacker in 2011. Schaffer, Anderson and DeBacker also received National Soccer Coaches Association of America's all-region awards. Additionally, Lauren Carnes, Megan Schaffer and DeBacker earned LSC All-Academic recognition and the ASU team was honored by the NSCAA for its academic success last season. Danielle Edwards was named the LSC's Goalkeeper of the Year in 2012.
The 2013 season was historic for the ASU soccer program as the team claimed its first conference championship since it was started in 1996. The Rambelles went 11-4-2 in the regular season, including posting a 7-2-1 conference record. That record gave them the top seed and the right to host the conference tournament for the first time. Under McCorkle's coaching, six players earned postseason conference honors with Caitlyn Conaway, Lauren Perry and Jordan Benfield taking second team honors to go along with Schaffer and Anderson earning first-team. Benfield and Trisha Killen were tabbed to the All-Academic team and McCorkle was named Co-Coach of the Year. He earned his career's 100th win with a 2-1 victory at the ASU Soccer Field over Texas A&M-Commerce on Oct. 20, 2013.
McCorkle led the Rambelles to their third straight LSC tournament and an 11-7-2 record in 2012. ASU opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Texas Woman's in the quarterfinals before falling in penalty kicks in the semifinals. The Rambelles were the top defensive team in the conference throughout the season and limited opponents to a .085 shooting percentage and to 18 goals in 20 games played in 2012.
Angelo State set a single-season record for most wins (13) and most conference wins (9) in a season, while clinching their first NCAA berth in 2010 under McCorkle’s leadership. The Belles also earned their first postseason win in program history with a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce at the conference tournament in 2010 before falling in penalty kicks (4-3) to the Lions in the 2011 tournament.
“It was a great journey in 2010 for our soccer program,” he said. “We put ourselves in a good position with our player’s hard work in the offseason and won some close games because of the girl’s effort. I couldn’t be prouder of our team and their effort.”
A former ASU assistant coach from 2001-02, McCorkle returned to Angelo State in 2008 to become the fourth head coach in Rambelles’ history after Tom Brown accepted the same role at Sam Houston State. McCorkle was an assistant under Brown during the 2001-2002 seasons. Prior to his return to ASU, McCorkle spent five seasons as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico University. He posted a 37-34-4 overall record with the Zias after starting the program from scratch in 2003.
In 2009, McCorkle led the Rambelles to a 10-9 overall record and a 4-6 mark in conference play. The season fell short of making the postseason by just one win for the second straight season. Despite four one-goal conference losses, ASU recorded its sixth 10-win season in seven years and had three players earn All-LSC honorable mention.
In his first ASU campaign, McCorkle led the Rambelles to just their fifth-ever 10-win season. They finished 10-7-3, but missed the LSC tournament by just one win. One ASU player made the All-LSC second team and four received honorable mention.
While at ENMU, McCorkle coached 13 All-LSC players and 29 Academic All-LSC honorees. His first season ended with a 3-12 record but built towards a 10-win season in 2005 and a LSC Tournament appearance in 2006. McCorkle also started the ENMU men’s program in 2004 before handing it over to his assistant coach after the first season. Additionally, his teams were honored with National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Awards each of his five seasons.
Also boasting an extensive club soccer background, McCorkle supervised the Grand Junction (Colo.) Soccer Club, spending more than six years as director of coaching and player development. During that time, he oversaw more than 1,200 players and was responsible for the overall philosophy of the club.
At the high school level, McCorkle served as assistant coach of the girls (1989-94) and head coach of the boys (1990-94) soccer teams at Monument High School in Fruita, Colo. He helped led the Lady Wildcats to four conference titles and five state playoff appearances, while his boys teams claimed one conference crown and made two trips to the state playoffs.
McCorkle has held a USSF “A” Coaching License since 1995 and earned a Youth Coaching License from the U.S. Soccer Federation in 1997. He also holds an Advanced National Coaching License from the NSCAA. He has served as a head coach in the New Mexico Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2006-2008 and was on the Colorado ODP coaching staff from 1992-2001. He has been a member of the U.S. Soccer Coaches Organization since 1993 and the NSCAA since 1995.
As a player, McCorkle founded, coached and played for the Mesa State College club team from 1987-91 and was named team MVP for the 1987-88 seasons. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Mesa State in 1994 and his master’s degree in sport administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 2001.
