Dean and Brown Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

SAN ANGELO – Two of Angelo State soccer's senior leaders were voted among the brightest in the region as Shannon Dean and Ashley Brown were both recognized as members of the 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Team released Tuesday.

Dean, an exercise science major and double minor in biology and psychology, earned District VI First-Team honors as voted on by regional members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The senior from Austin sports a 3.66 grade point average and has made ASU's Dean's List every semester of her academic career. Dean is the captain of the Rambelle soccer team and helped guide the team to a school-record-tying 12 wins and new all-time high with nine conference wins. She's started every game at midfield.

Brown is a kinesiology major with a double minor in special education and psychology who boasts a 3.66 GPA. The senior from Harlan, Iowa, earned District VI Second-Team accolades and has made ASU's Dean's list in each of the last two semesters. The forward has kicked in six goals this season, with three serving as the game-winning tally. One of those came in the finals seconds against then-nationally ranked Midwestern State on Oct. 24, handing the Mustangs their first loss in Lone Star Conference play.

“It's a great accomplishment and I'm very proud of them,” Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. “You just have to go back to last weekend to see how important they've been to our success. Ashley scored two goals, the first and last goal against East Central – the game winner. The week before, she was LSC Player of the Week after she scored two goals against the top two teams in the conference. Shannon is one of those where statistically, her hard work doesn't always show up, but she does so many important things winning the ball back. This past weekend at Northeastern State, she literally saved the ball with a header off the line. They're a huge part for us.”

The next game for the pair of seniors is Angelo State's first postseason match since the 2007 season, when the third-seeded 'Belles have a first-round matchup against No. 6-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce at noon on Nov. 4, at the MSU Soccer Field in Wichita Falls. In their last meeting, the Rambelles earned a 1-0 victory over the Lions on the road (Oct. 8).
