Angelo State Football Releases 2011 Schedule

2011 Angelo State Football Schedule

SAN ANGELO –
Angelo State football fans will be reintroduced to an unfamiliar word next fall as the Rams play their first “non-conference” NCAA Division II games since the 2006 season as the team released its 2011 schedule Monday. The Rams will play two games against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes and a game against former Lone Star Conference member Central Oklahoma before diving into league play.

Angelo State will open the 2011 campaign with a pair of long road trips, the first to Gunnison, Colo., where the team will match-up with Western State on Sept. 3 – the last NCAA Division II foe the Rams played out of conference. Angelo State is 4-0 all-time against the Mountaineers, including a defensive, 9-8, win by ASU on Sept. 2, 2006 as both teams combined for just 345 yards of total offense. Angelo State will then travel to Chadron State (Sept. 10) in the northwest corner of Nebraska before hosting Central Oklahoma at San Angelo Stadium (Sept. 17).

“Of course you'd like to play the first couple of games at home, but I think it's a great situation for us to see how we stack up against a couple of teams from a different region and they're quality Division II programs,” Angelo State head coach Will Wagner said. “I've had the opportunity to go up against Chadron State and (Coach Bill O'Boyle), and I know what they're team is all about. This will be my first time playing against Western Colorado, but I'm looking forward to the trip. It will be a great test to see where we're at early in the season.”

The Rams won't waste any time getting to the meat of the new-look Lone Star Conference schedule when the team opens league play on the road at Abilene Christian for the second annual Big Country-Concho Valley Shootout presented by State Farm.

“The great thing is that we're going to get a home game in for our fans before we go to Abilene, so I'm excited about that,” Wagner said. “Then we're going to have to go on the road against one of the best teams in the Lone Star Conference. Hopefully our guys will have some confidence by then and we're coming together as a team and playing well.”

Angelo State will alternate home and away each week for the rest of the season with home games against Eastern New Mexico (Oct. 1), Midwestern State (Oct. 15), Texas A&M-Kingsville (Oct. 29) and Tarleton State (Nov. 12). The Rams will travel to West Texas A&M (Oct. 8), Texas A&M-Commerce (Oct. 22) and Incarnate Word (Nov. 5). The NCAA Division II Playoffs are scheduled to begin Nov. 19.

The Rams have played three games outside of the Lone Star Conference since 2006, a trio of road contests against NCAA Division I FCS foes in the Southland Conference (Texas State and Sam Houston State).

Angelo State will announce its 2011 signing class on National Signing Day, Wed., Feb. 2.
