Kacie at the Bat; ‘Belles Improve to 17-0

Game 1 // Final Box | Game 2 // Final Box

SAN ANGELO – The nationally-ranked Angelo State softball team's unblemished season was in jeopardy Saturday, as the Rambelles trailed, 4-2, entering the bottom of the seventh against St. Edward's until Kacie Easley's two-run double tied the game at the ASU Softball Complex. The 'Belles would go on to win the game, 5-4, and improved to 17-0 on the season after earning a 2-1 victory in the final game of the day.

The No. 3 Rambelles opened the seventh inning with back-to-back singles from Chelsey Walters and Kaycee Taylor; however, after a bunt pop-up and a fielder's choice, the 'Belles were down to their final out of the game. With the game in the balance, All-American Easley laced a double to left field, bringing home a pair of runs to tie the game. ASU would go on to win in the eighth inning when another All-American, Alix Dean, hit a single up the middle to bring home Brittany Astle.

“St. Edward's has a solid team and we knew that going into the game,” said ASU head coach Travis Scott. “Both teams played well defensively, but we were able to find a way to win. Kacie's double was huge for us in the bottom of the seventh, and I couldn't be happier for her.”

Claire Molina (5-0) picked up the win, after coming in to throw three shutout innings without allowing a hit.

The final game of the contest was another extra-inning affair that resulted in 2-1 win for Angelo State. ASU's pitching duo of Jessica Newsome and Molina allowed just five hits and struck out six in 8.0 innings of work.

The Rattlers (10-6) got on the board first on a sacrifice fly by Brianna Bozon in the top of the fourth, but the Rambelles would tie it with a sacrifice of their own two innings later. Taylor was able to lift the ball to center field, which allowed the speedy Astle to tag and score.

Angelo State's eighth-inning two-out rally was capped off by a base hit up the middle by DeeshanaLynn Tafiti that scored Taylor who was on second. The Rattler centerfielder was unable to field the ball cleanly and allowed Taylor to score, giving ASU a 2-1 victory.

Angelo State's 17-0 record is the second-best start in school history, trailing only the 19-0 start of the 2003 squad. With the pair of wins on Saturday, ASU is now 69-7 in the month of February dating back to 2008.

The 'Belles will return to the diamond March 2 for a doubleheader against St. Mary's in San Antonio beginning at noon with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
