KINGSVILLE, Texas – Trevor Rogers extended his grip on the long jump event while posting the second-best mark in the nation this season, part of seven wins in eight different field events by the Angelo State men's track and field team at the IBC Bank Cactus Cup Saturday. Both the ASU men and women's teams finished second in the team scoring and combined to post seven NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks at Javelina Stadium.
Rogers, a junior from El Sobrante, Calif., leaped a season-best 24'8.5” to win his third straight outdoor long jump title and fifth long jump win in five tries dating back to the indoor season. Rogers mark was three inches longer than his previous provisional qualifying time and helped him win Saturday's contest by nearly three feet. His effort was part of a near sweep by the Rams in the field events as the team won all seven of the events it entered. Angelo State did not have an athlete compete in the high jump.
“He's very powerful on the runway and the question of whether he's going to be on the board or not is not there,” Angelo State head coach
James Reid said. “His mark today was almost an automatic qualifying mark. He's definitely doing what we thought he was capable of. He's bound to hit a real big one at one of the upcoming meets. His consistency is going to make him very valuable to our team. The athletes that can consistently hit the marks, are the ones that consistently get on the awards stand.”
Mark Slone also posted a provisional qualifying mark when he won the triple jump with a leap of 48'10.75”. Slone's jump also ranks as the second-longest in the nation this season prior to this weekend's slate of competition.
Nick Alejandro won the shot put with a throw of 51'6.5” and won the hammer throw for the second-consecutive week with a toss of 159'7”.
Tyler Orlando posted the top marks in both the pole vault (15'5.75”) and javelin (189'9”) and
Wade Goode won the discus with a toss of 155'3”.
“It was plenty hot and the wind was blowing big time,” Reid said. “We knew the day would not be conducive to oval events, but there was a chance for the straight events and field events to do well. That was
Tyler Orlando's first vault since surgery, so it was nice to see he's right on target there.
Nick Alejandro had a really good meet and put up some good performances. He's had two weeks in a row where he's been right there around 160-feet and he's probably ready to hit a big one.
All together, the men's team posted 25 top-five finishes at the six-team meet, and finished closely behind Texas A&M-Kingsville (206) with 194 total team points. NCAA Division I institution Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was third with 120 points and Texas-Pan American was fourth with 78 points.
The Rambelles were also impressive during the field events with four wins in the eight events, including five provisional qualifying marks. Kelsey Wilson, fresh off of competition at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships, topped her previous season-high by 2.5 inches while posting a jump of 12'4.5” to win the pole vault.
Summer Sutherland finished second and notched a provisional vault of 12'0.5”. Kim Williams claimed the shot put title with a heave of 45'6.5” and
Marquisia Elam (146') and
Jayda Spencer (143'11”) finished first and second in the discus. All three were provisional qualifying efforts.
Andrea Edwards was Angelo State's fourth event winner after she threw the hammer 150'9”.
“That was a personal best for both women's vaulters and really solid provisional marks,” Reid said. “It's a big burden off
Summer Sutherland's shoulders, she had a really good day. Kelsey Wilson bounced back after a disappointing indoor meet at nationals. I thought Kim Williams in the shot put was big time. She didn't throw that far until the conference meet last year so she's about a month and a half ahead of where she was last season.
On the track,
Bree Bennett,
Cathryn Rittenberry and
Summer Sutherland finished first, second and third in the 100-meter hurdles. Bennett, the reigning LSC South Division Track Athlete of the Week, posted a quick time of 13.90 seconds but excessive wind will keep it from counting as a qualifying time. The Rambelles 4x100-meter relay team of Bennett,
Tiffany Wilcox,
Makayla Myers and
Theresa Sue also claimed a win after finishing their race in 48.24 seconds. Angelo State finished second in the team scoring with 183 points, just two points behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, however, neither the Rams nor the Rambelles had any distance entries to the event.
Angelo State will host its first home event of the season next week with the running of the ASU Spring Break Multi-Event Meet (March 24-25).
