SAN ANTONIO
– The No. 1 Angelo State softball team's seventh-inning surge plated eight runs and earned a 10-3 come-from-behind win in the opening game against St. Mary's Wednesday in San Antonio. In the second game, the Rambelles would suffer their first loss of the season and come up one win short of tying the 2003 team's record of 19-0 to start the season.

Angelo State (18-1) scored two quick runs in the top of the first to build an early lead. Chelsey Walters led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Kaycee Taylor single to left center. Walters then scored after DeeshanaLynn Tafiti singled to center, while Taylor would eventually come home on an Elsa Apo sacrifice fly.

The 'Belles' hot bats cooled and the Rattlers took a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh.

Five errors in the top of the seventh came back to bite the Rattlers, as the Rambelles scored eight runs on four hits to earn a 10-3 win. Claire Molina earned her third-consecutive win in relief and improved to 6-0 on the year after allowing just one run in 3.2 innings of work.

“We were able to take advantage of mistakes and got some timely hits,” said Angelo State head coach Travis Scott. “As of late, we've been able to have that big inning and that's what happened again (Wednesday).”

Angelo State endured its first loss of the season after St. Mary's run-ruled the 'Belles, 8-0, in five innings. St. Mary's outhit the 'Belles, 8-2, and improved to 12-10 on the season.

“We had too many mistakes today and you can't do that against a good team,” said Scott. “We forced ourselves into a lot of bad situation and they took advantage of it.”

The Rambelles return to the diamond March 6, for a doubleheader against Texas A&M-International in San Angelo at the ASU Softball Complex. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m., with the second game to follow.
