WICHITA FALLS – Angelo State's Krista Czarnecki shot a one-over par 73 to sit tied for first after the opening round of the Midwestern State Invitational at the Champions Course at Weeks Park Monday. The Rambelles were tied for sixth after shooting a 319 (+31) through the first 18 holes of the par-72, 5,986-yard course.

Czarnecki, a sophomore from El Paso, finished the day sharing the top of the leader board with Midwestern State's Kendra Whittley after shooting a 35 on the back nine. Czarnecki dropped three strokes after the turn to match Whittley for the lowest nine-hole total, but was best among all golfers on the back nine.

“Krista was solid, she played great,” Angelo State head coach Kathleen Price said. “She bogeyed her first two holes then she made par all the way through until No. 18. She got frustrated with (the pars) and told me, 'I want to make a birdie because this is kind of annoying,' and I said 'Go make a birdie then,' and she did.”

Maury McCormick and Randee Stegman were both tied for the second-best individual performance for the Rambelles with an 9-over-81 and tied for 33rd overall. Like Czarnecki, Stegman found a groove on the back nine and improved five strokes to shoot a 38 after posting a 43 on the front. Courtney Rutledge also counted towards the team score with an 84 (+12). Skylar Smith was close behind with an 85 (+13), while Makenzie Stone competed as an individual and shot a 95.

“Randee finished up good at the end,” Price said. “It was really windy out there today. She made a long putt to save a bogey on No. 7 – about a 25-foot putt – and it jump started her there. She then made a nice birdie putt on No. 14, about a 50-footer, and then had a super play over on No. 17 to make another birdie.”

Tournament host Midwestern State and Northeastern State were tied for first with an overall team score of 310, just nine strokes ahead of the Rambelles. While Czarnecki and Whittley led the way, Northeastern State's Whitney McAteer and Kelsay Kirkpatrick were not far behind with each shooting a 3-over-75. Central Oklahoma (311), St. Edwards (312), and Redlands Community College (315) finished the first round ahead of the Belles'.
