Game 1 Final Stats (.pdf) | Game 2 Final Stats (.pdf)

SAN ANGELO – After the Angelo State baseball team put together a 10-game winning streak to start the month of March, the Rams have dropped eight in a row marking the longest losing streak in program history. The losing streak reached eight after Angelo State dropped a pair of games to Tarleton State by scores of 11-1 and 11-5 Saturday at Foster Field. For the first time in school history, Tarleton State swept Angelo State in a series.

The Rams 17-15, 11-10 LSC) were limited to just one earned run on two hits in game one, as Tarleton State (20-7, 15-6 LSC) starter Ryan Salt (2-0) pitched a complete game to earn the victory. Salt went 7.0 innings allowing four walks and striking out four.

Despite loading the bases after hitting Zak Leonhardt and walking both Brent Denny and Marcellous Biggins with two outs, Salt was able to get out of the jam as he struck out Brian Brademan.

The Rams scored their only run of the ballgame in the bottom of the third cutting the Texans' lead to 5-1. Zach Cohen drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Tate Allison drove a sacrifice fly to left to score Cohen. Joseph Leftridge singled through the left side, but was thrown out stealing at second to end the inning.

ASU starter Rick Reyna (3-2) suffered the loss after pitching 3.0 innings of work and allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits. Reyna walked two and struck out one.

After Cohen's run in the third, Salt shut down the Rams only allowing one hit the rest of the game. The hit was a single to center off the bat of Brademan in the fifth. Brademan moved to second on a wild pitch and was stranded at third as Salt got Travis Lites and Allison to fly out.

The Texans' offense plated three runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh to route ASU, 11-1, in game one.

Senior right-hander Payden Bravenec got the starting nod, his first of the season, in the night cap. He tossed 3.0 innings allowing two runs, both earned on four hits and fanned two.

Although Bravenec surrendered one run in the top of the first, the Rams were quick to counter and plate three of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Cohen drew a lead-off walk and Leonhardt reached on a fielding error by short. Leftridge reached on a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Allison collected an RBI after drawing another walk to keep the bases full of Rams. Leonhardt scored on a wild pitch to give the Rams their first lead of the series and Lites hit a sacrifice fly to center plating Leftridge and giving Angelo State a 3-1 advantage.

The Rams added another run in the third after Garrett Harris laced a double down the leftfield line and later scored on a single to left by Denny to take a 4-2 lead. Angelo State increased its lead to three runs (5-2) in the fourth after Brademan reached base on a single back up the middle and scored on another wild pitch.

Tarleton State starter Brander Van Riper only went 2.2 innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits. He was relieved by Nathan Lewis (4-1) who pitched 4.2 innings and only surrendered one earned run on a pair of hits.

James Conlee (4-1) came on in relief for the Rams and retired the first five batters he faced. However, Conlee got into some trouble in late in the game and gave up nine runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits as he suffered his first loss of the season.

The Texans batted around in the ninth inning, scoring six runs to win the game 11-5. Ryan Turner earned his sixth save of the season as he entered the game with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.

The Rams look to snap their eight-game losing streak when they hit the road next weekend when they take on Northeastern State in a four-game Lone Star Conference series in Tahlequah, Okla., Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2. Both doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
