Opening Round Results (.pdf)

SEASIDE, Calif. –
Maury McCormick may not have received everything she wanted on her birthday, but it sure felt like a party for the Angelo State sophomore after she birdied the opening hole at the Cal State Monterey Bay Lady Otter Spring Invitational Monday. McCormick shot an 11-over-84 and joined Krista Czarnecki (6-over-79) as the top shooters for the Rambelles after the opening round at the par-73, 5,810-yard Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course.

McCormick, who turned 20 Monday, birdied the par-5, 480-yard hole No. 1, but had a tough time on the rest of the front nine while posting a 45 at the turn. The Wall native dropped six strokes on the back nine and was tied for 70th position after the tournament's first round. Czarnecki, like McCormick, had a difficult time on the front nine before rallying with a late charge. She had a double bogey on a par-3 to post a 41 at the turn, then closed with a 38 on the backside. Czarnecki's was tied for 22nd place position after 18 holes, tops among the Rambelles, who were 18th with a 339 (+47) in the opening round.

Courtney Rutledge and Randee Stegman each turned in scores of 88 (+15) to round out the counted scores on Monday. Makenzie Stone shot a 90, but it wasn't counted towards the team total.

“We saw some very fast greens today and it was a little windy, but this is a really beautiful, beautiful golf course,” Angelo State head coach Kathleen Price said. “There's lots of competition here and we had a tough day. We had to grind a little bit out there. I look for Courtney and Randee to come back strong tomorrow, and I know all the girls are looking forward to the opportunity to get back out there and play.”

Nova Southeastern led the field with a 295 (+3) in the first round and had the tournament leader in Taylor Collins, who shot a 2-under 71. Fellow Lone Star Conference team West Texas A&M was tied for fourth with a 316 (+24). The tournament concludes with a second and final round on Tuesday.
