SEASIDE, Calif. – Angelo State tied for the biggest single-round improvement as the team cut 18 strokes off its opening-round total to finish the Lady Otter Spring Invitational at Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course in 17th place Tuesday. The Belles' top four players all improved their scores as the team shot 339-321—660 (+29) for the tournament on the par-73, 5,810-yard course.
“I'm really pleased with the way the girls played today,” Angelo State head coach Kathleen Price said. “We showed some improvement and had to be mentally tough. Three of our gals realized that they had to step up and that was nice to see. We got better today and that's something you're always trying to do.”
Krista Czarnecki, who shot a 4-over-77 after turning in a 79 Monday, led the way for the Rambelles and finished tied for 18th in the 117-player field – the largest of the season for ASU. Czarnecki turned in her second straight top-20 finish and third overall of the spring season.
Maury McCormick and
Randee Stegman each finished with a 167 total and tied for 66th, with Stegman showing the biggest improvement after besting Monday's round by nine strokes.
Courtney Rutledge cut her score down six stokes Tuesday to shoot a 170, to contribute the final scoring round for the Rambelles. Mackenzie Stone finished the tournament with a 183.
Nova Southeastern University won the tournament with a team score of 597 (+13) while host Cal State Monterey Bay finished second with a 616 (+32). Nova Southeastern also took home individual medalist honors with Abbey Gittings shooting even par in both rounds to beat out teammate Sandra Changkija (73-74—147 (+1)).
Angelo State will have one more tune-up before the Lone Star Conference Championship (April 18-20) when the team competes at the Tarleton State Tournament at Harbor Lakes Country Club in Granbury, Texas (April 11-12).
