PORTALES, N.M. – Ryan Morgan belted his first career home run in a Rams' uniform in game one and
Tate Allison hammered a solo shot in the night cap as the Angelo State baseball team split a doubleheader at Eastern New Mexico Saturday. The Rams dropped game one by a score of 9-7, and came back to run-rule the Greyhounds in game two as they won, 14-4, in seven innings.
After dropping the first two games of the three-game series to Eastern New Mexico (12-25, 8-19), Angelo State (21-20, 15-15 LSC) sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning of the third and final game and scored seven runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead over the Greyhounds.
Every Ram scored at least one run in the contest with Allison and
Brent Denny leading the way with three runs each. Leftfielder
Garrett Harris tied a career-high with four runs batted in. Allison went 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI, while Denny finished the contest going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Harris was 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and one run scored.
The Greyhounds managed three runs in the bottom half of the first, but ASU added another run in the second to increase its lead to five (8-3). The Rams' offense was on fire as they batted .568 as a team in the nightcap.
Rick Reyna, Angelo State's starting pitcher, was excellent on the mound as he limited the Greyhounds to just one run after the first inning. Reyna (4-2) collected the win after going 5.2 innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on as many hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Freshman southpaw Aaron Anderson (2-2) suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs, all of which were earned, on six hits in 0.1 innings pitched. He faced nine batters, walked one and fanned one.
An Eastern New Mexico pitching change did not stop the Rams as they tallied seven runs, six earned, off of five different relief pitchers en route to a 14-4 seven-inning victory.
In game one, the Greyhounds posted three runs in the bottom of the first off of ASU starter
Bren Schuehler. However, the Rams quickly erased the deficit and tied the game at three as they posted a trio of runs in the top of the second.
Angelo State took a three-run lead (6-3) in the fourth, but Eastern New Mexico continued to chip away at the Rams' lead and tied the game at six in the bottom of the fifth.
ASU's
James Conlee (5-3) got into trouble in the sixth surrendering six runs, all earned, on as many hits in 1.1 innings of work to absorb the loss.
After surrendering a three-run lead, and falling behind by six, the Rams attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh.
Toby Semler reached on a fielder's choice and Morgan slammed a two-run homer to leftfield to pull ASU within four. Morgan would finish game one with a career night as he went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBIs. However, junior right-hander Ryan Pruitt (2-2) retired the next two batters to collect the win and end the game.
Pruitt pitched 5.0 innings of relief allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. He walked a pair and struck out two.
Next up, the Rams host their last homestand of the season as they welcome Lone Star Conference foe West Texas A&M to Foster Field for a three-game series. Game one is scheduled for Friday, April 22, at 7 p.m. The two teams will square off in a doubleheader Saturday, April 23, beginning at 1 p.m. Live stats, live streaming and live audio will be available for all of the games.
