SAN ANGELO – Just months after a return trip to the Lone Star Conference basketball tournament, Angelo State head women's basketball coach Sally Walling Brooks announced the signing of Cassi Stegall.
Cassi Stegall, joins a talented Rambelle squad that will see the majority of last season's team back on the court for the 2011-12 season. She comes to ASU after excelling at Hico High School in basketball, volleyball, track and softball. Stegall was a four-year letterwinner in both basketball and volleyball where she played guard and outside hitter in her respective sports.
She boasts a list of accomplishments as she earned 2011 Offensive Player of the Year accolades and was a Class 2A All-State selection as a senior and a sophomore. Stegall was an all-region selection in 2010 and garnered Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors. She was named district MVP in 2009 and collected Newcomer of the Year accolades as a freshman. Stegall finished her senior year averaging 21.8 points per game, 5.6 assists per game, 4.2 rebounds per game, 4.0 steals per game and poured in a total 783 points.
Stegall led her team to the Regional Finals in 2011, to a Bi-District Championship in 2010 and 2008, as well as a Regional Semi-Final in 2008.
“We are very excited to add Cassi to our list of signees for 2011,” Walling Brooks said. “She is a very solid all-around player and I believe she has unlimited potential. She has always been a leader for her team and I think she can bring that leadership ability to the Belles. She is a great kid and a very good student. I think she will be a perfect fit for our team.”
The Hico, Texas, native will join fall signees Haylee Oliver, Devon Wilde, Sierra Honea and Lauren Zoldey. Oliver capped her high school career by being named Class 2A Player of the Year. She was named a 2011 TABC and TGCA All-Star. Oliver added District MVP, All-West Texas Super Team MVP, and All-West Texas 2A MVP to her resume in her final year with San Saba High School.
Wilde is a product of Wall High School and averaged 12.0 points per game with 4.5 rebounds per game during her senior year. She shot 43 percent from the floor and 65 percent from the free throw line. Wilde earned district MVP honors as well as Wylie Tournament MVP accolades. She was named to the Caprock and Canyon All-Tournament Teams, and garnered TABC All-Region and All-State recognition. Wilde was named to the TABC, TGCA and FCA All-Star Teams as a senior. She also earned TGCA All-State honors and was named to the All-West Texas Super Team.
Honea finished her senior year as the All-West Texas 1A MVP. She also was named district MVP, TABC All-Region, TGCA All-State, All-West Texas Super Team and was selected to the TGCA All-Star Game. Honea excelled off the court as well as she was named an academic all-district honoree, and earned academic all-state accolades. A true leader, Honea served as team captain in her final year with the Lady Hawks.
Zoldey wrapped up her prep career with Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, with 237 points and 82 rebounds in her senior year. She recorded a season-high 19 points at Judson and tallied a season-best six boards on two separate occasions. Zoldey is a 5-foot-8 shooting guard who was an honorable mention selection in 2008 and 2009. She also earned academic all-district honors as a freshman and sophomore and was a team captain in 2009 and 2010. Zoldey helped lead the Knights to three consecutive District Championships from 2008-2010.
The five newest Belles look to bring a wealth of talent to an already promising Rambelle squad.
