SAN ANTONIO – The Angelo State baseball team recorded its first-ever triple play in program history in the top of the first, while
Garrett Henderson belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the third and
Joseph Leftridge followed with a two-run blast of his own in the next inning, but five ASU errors led to six unearned runs as the Rams dropped a 19-9 non-conference game to Texas A&M International at Sullivan Field on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word Tuesday night.
The Rams (24-21) opened the game in dramatic fashion as they recorded their first-ever triple play in program history to end the first inning. With runners at first and second with nobody out, first baseman Henderson snagged a line drive off the bat of Austin Voros, stepped on first and threw to shortstop
Marcellous Biggins, who was covering second, to complete the rare play.
In the bottom of the frame, Angelo State took a two-run lead on four singles. However, their lead would not last long as the Rams would allow three unearned runs to cross the plate in the next inning.
With a one-run lead, Texas A&M International (19-25) would not look back. The Dustdevils held the Rams scoreless in the bottom of the second and added four runs in the top of the third to increase their lead to five (7-2).
Angelo State would not give up and the Rams plated three runs off of Henderson's blast, cutting the Dustdevils' lead to two (7-5). The junior first baseman finished the game going 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.
Texas A&M International broke the game open in the top of the fourth as they tallied five runs in the frame to take a 12-5 advantage.
Angelo State managed to score another two runs in the bottom of the inning off of Leftridge's two-run homer to pull within five (12-7). The centerfielder ended the night going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. However, the Dustdevils would force the Rams to use six pitchers over nine innings as TAMIU continued to score.
The two teams' respective offenses seemed to quiet down in the middle innings as neither team crossed the plate until the Dustdevils added a run in the eight to increase their lead to six (13-7).
The Dustdevils were not done scoring, however, as they batted around in the top of the ninth and scored six runs in the frame to take a commanding 19-7 lead over the Rams.
ASU attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth as they plated a pair of runs, but it was not enough as Texas A&M International took the game, 19-9.
Texas A&M International went through four pitchers and reliever James Santillan (2-3) earned the win. Santillan went 2.2 innings without allowing a run and surrendered just one base hit.
Angelo State's
Craig Blair (2-2) suffered the loss as he pitched 1.2 innings of work and allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on five hits.
The Rams return to the diamond Friday, April 29, when they take on Lone Star Conference foe Cameron in Lawton, Okla., in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Angelo State and Cameron will close out the regular season Saturday, April 30, with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for all four games, while live audio will be available for the first three. The first three, which are conference games, while the fourth is a non-conference game, will be broadcast live on KKSA 1260 by Jeremy Bryant.
