TURLOCK, Calif. -
Angelo State graduate assistant coach Chrystal Ruiz summed up Thursday's opening day of competition at the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the simplest of ways - it's done, and now tomorrow.

The Rams and Belles ended the first day of competition still looking for either team's first points but won't have to wait long for more opportunities. Isidro Garcia (400-meter dash), Brian Holik (400-meter hurdles), Nick Smith (100-meter dash) and Tiffany Wilcox (100-meter dash) all competed in preliminary races Thursday at Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium and failed to qualify for the finals.

"It's obviously disappointing because we - me, the athletes and the other coaches - come here with the expectation that we're going to be on the awards stand and that's the goal that they have," Angelo State head coach James Reid said. "It's definitely not for lack of effort."

Trevor Rogers made the initial cut during the long jump with a leap of 23-9 (7.24m) on his second attempt, but got bumped from All-American status by Southern Connecticut State's Diwani Augustine in the finals. Rogers finished ninth, the closest Angelo State athlete to scoring on the three-day meet's first day. Cal State L.A.'s Giorgio Bryant broke his own stadium record with a jump of 26-1.5 (7.96m) to win the event.

Smith and Holik both moved up from their pre-meet positions but the improvement wasn't enough to crack the top eight and make it to Saturday's finals. Smith entered the meet as the No. 14 runner and ran the 12th-fastest time in prelims with a 10.46 in the 100. Holik qualified for nationals as the No. 15 runner in the 400 hurdles but finished in 52.87 seconds and 11th place.

Wilcox, one of four Rambelles competing at the meet, ran a 12.08 in the 100 and Garcia, also a member of the 4x400-meter relay team, finished in 48.40 in the 400 and in 16th after the prelims.

Angelo State will get its next scoring opportunity at 7:10 p.m. (Central) Friday when Kelsey Wilson begins pole vault competition. Smith will be back on the track in the men's 200-meter dash prelims, followed by Bree Bennett in the 100-meter hurdles, and Garcia, Holik, Terence Holland and Robbie Thayer in the 4x400-meter relay prelims.
