TURLOCK, Calif. - Been there, done that. Angelo State's
Tyler Orlando and
Jacob McDonald repeated as All-Americans in the javelin at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships early Saturday afternoon at Warrior Stadium and claimed third and seventh place on the award stand, the same positions the duo finished in last season.
It looked like old hat for the Ram tandem, with McDonald leaning over to his right at one point during the pictures on the awards stand to help a competitor flip around his trophy so the label faced the crowd. Orlando claimed All-America status for the third year in a row with the third-best throw of 216-5 (65.97m) and McDonald earned back-to-back All-America honors with a seventh-place throw of 196-8 (59.95m).
The tandem scored the first points for Angelo State at the championship meet after both the Rams and Belles were shut out over the first two days of competition. Several other ASU athletes were set to compete in field events Saturday afternoon, with the men's 4x400-meter relay set to close out the meet late Saturday night.
McDonald threw in the first of two flights and looked to have short day after a mediocre toss and a scratch. He came through with a big mark when he needed it, however, hitting a big throw of 196-8 (59.95m) to earn three more throws in the finals.
Conversely, Orlando's first throw of 202-6 (61.72m) would have been enough to reach the finals and he bettered that mark on his second toss with a 216-5 (65.97m). The senior tallied six throws of 60-meters or more, but none were better than the second. McDonald also failed to improve in the finals.
UC San Diego's Nick Howe repeated as the champion in javelin with a throw of 231-8 (70.49m), which he hit on his very first attempt and teh second throw overall of the competition. Josh Hontz of East Stroudsburg finished second, just ahead of Orlando with a throw of 225-4 (68.68m).
