SAN ANGELO – Hanna Horeis scored an early Senior Day goal for Angelo State but West Texas A&M escaped the ASU Soccer Field with a 2-1 Lone Star Conference win over the Rambelles after two unanswered Leslie Briggs goals on Sunday.
The Rambelles (9-7-1, 7-5-1 LSC) held the lead for 11 minutes after Horeis scored her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute of play off an assist from
Maggie Schaffer. ASU looked to be going into halftime with a 1-0 lead but Briggs scored her first goal of the day with 17 seconds remaining in the half off an assist from Bailey Day. Briggs would add her conference-leading 16th goal of the season just 12 minutes into the second half for the game winner.
“Overall it's very disappointing because we got the first goal and had a lot of spirit with us,” said
Lauren Carnes, who was playing in her 75th game for ASU. “One goal isn't enough a lot of the time and we had some chances but weren't able to get another one. You have to keep pushing and unfortunately they got their two goals and we weren't able to match them.”

Horeis now has 11 goals in her career going into the regular season finale next Friday at Incarnate Word. The senior, who was playing in her 72nd game at ASU after playing her high school soccer at San Angelo Central, added two shots and now leads the Rambelles with 45 shots this season.
“I think we will take more fight into our next game,” Horeis said. “We missed a lot of shots today that would have been the difference and we have to make those in order to win games like this. We played well but we still have to get goals.”
ASU outshot WT 20-8 in the game, including an 11-5 advantage in shots in the first period.
Lauren Bateman led the Rambelles with five shot, while Schaffer contributed four and
Ashley Exford and
Sierra Anderson added three each. The Rambelles also led 3-2 in corner kicks against the Lady Buffs who remain tied for first place in the conference standings with Incarnate Word which was a 2-1 winner over Eastern New Mexico on Sunday. WT and UIW both have 27 points in conference while ASU remains in third place with 22 points and Midwestern State in fourth with 21 points.
“I'm disappointed because we played so well in the first half and really dominated the first 44 minutes of the half,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. “We did a great job of creating good chances by knocking the ball around but it's been the story of the season that we haven't been able to get those goals to put teams away in games like this.”

“I'm extremely proud of all five of them. They are all really important contributors to our team and are great players. I was happy to see Hanna get a goal on senior day and think that they all made our program proud. It was a good weekend for them and should be pleased with the big picture.”
