No. 9 Belles Breeze By Cardinals in Straight Sets

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team stayed undefeated inside the Junell Center this season with an impressive 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-16) Lone Star Conference sweep over Incarnate Word on Tuesday in the Belles annual Dig Pink match to bring awareness to breast cancer.

The Belles (20-3, 13-1 LSC) have now won seven straight matches and 15 of their last 16. ASU improved to 9-0 at home and maintains its first-place standing in the conference. It is also the second straight season with 20 or more wins and the third 20-plus win year for head coach Chuck Waddington.

“We stayed pretty efficient offensively because of our defense,” Waddington said. “We dug a lot of balls and we kept them off balance. We served tough and that's our formula. When we are digging balls and serving well then we are able to transition and score. I thought we did a great job of that tonight.”

Kaelen Valdez led Angelo State with 21 digs and 10 kills, while Maddie Huth added 10 kills and five blocks. Shelbi Goode contributed 10 kills for the Belles with Alex Woolsey contributing 32 assists and 12 digs. Shelby Wilt and Katie MacLeay steadied the defense with 11 digs each with Haley Bianco recording eight digs just hours after being named the conference's defensive player of the week.

Angelo State hit for a .240 percentage in the match while limiting UIW to a .048 percentage. ASU finished with a 7-5 block advantage and hit .412 in the opening set to establish the tone inside its home gym.

The Belles return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday against No. 11 West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs, who handed ASU its only conference loss this season, will come into San Angelo with a 12-2 LSC record and an identical 20-3 mark as the Belles.

“There's no question that it's a big match,” Waddington said. “It will determine if we can win the conference championship and hosting the conference tournament. We want to win the regular season championship and it's not a match that will require us to hype up. We just have to play our style of volleyball and I feel good about our chances if we can do that.”
