SAN ANGELO – Sydney Solomon scored an unassisted goal for Incarnate Word in the 82
nd minute of play to give the Cardinals a 1-0 Lone Star Conference win over Angelo State on Wednesday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (5-5-1, 3-3-1 LSC) outshot UIW 10-7 in the game but continued their season-long trend of not capitalizing on the scoring prospects. ASU, which is now 1-1-1 in home conference games, had three shots on goal and limited the Cardinals (4-5-0, 4-3-0 LSC) to three second-half shots.
“We did plenty to get the goals that we needed to win this game,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. “We just aren't handling the pressure when we have great opportunities to score. We played so well on defense and limited them to very few chances.”

Sierra Anderson led the Rambelles with three shots, while
Hanna Horeis and
Lauren Carnes each had two shots.
Teegan Courtney had the best strike on a ball in the game for ASU, but hit the crossbar in the 77
th minute of action. Goalkeeper
Danielle Edwards recorded three saves for the Rambelles and now has 39 saves this season. ASU has now been shut out in four games this season offensively and have limited opponent to one goal or fewer in six of its 11 games.
“There are times when we rushed it and sometimes we backed off and let the defense recover,” McCorkle said. “I'm extremely proud of the way we played but we still are not finishing and that is the reason why we are not winning these games we should.”
Solomon had three of UIW's shots with Sarah Johnson adding two more.
Angelo State returns to action at 4 p.m. on Friday against Texas Woman's before hosting Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m. on Sunday. ASU lost a 2-1 game against TWU and took a 2-1 win over TAMU-Commerce earlier this season.
“I'm content with our system because we are creating so many chances and limiting the other team's goals but it comes down to us scoring goals,” McCorkle said. “If we could start finishing goals there is no reason why we aren't the best team in the conference. Defensively we are fantastic but offensively we are disappointing.”
