CANYON – Angelo State's Danielle Edwards was named the Lone Star Conference's Goalkeeper of the Year and
Lauren Carnes was tabbed a first-team midfielder on Wednesday night at the conference's annual soccer banquet.
Caitlyn Conaway and Lauren Bateman each earned second-team honors for their play this season, while Kara Edwards was an honorable mention selection and Jordan Benfield and Carnes were named to the All-LSC Academic team.
Edwards, who was also a first-team selection, recorded 71 saves this season and had a conference-high seven shutouts for the Rambelles in her first season as the team's starter. Edwards play 1,618 minutes in the regular season and allowed only 16 goals in 18 games. The senior, who graduated from San Angelo Lake View, finished with a .816 saves percentage and helped lead ASU become the stingiest defense in the conference.
“She has been fantastic in goal for us and will share this award with her teammates who did a great job defensively all year,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. “I couldn't be happier for Dani in earning this award and am really proud of her development this season. She is a great teammate and a great goalkeeper for us.”
Carnes finished the season with a team-leading six assists in her senior season. Chosen as a team captain for the second straight year, Carnes started each game for the Rambelles and had 19 shots in the regular season. She assisted in two goals in games against New Mexico Highlands and Texas A&M-Commerce this season and has 15 assists in her career leading into the conference tournament.
“She has been a huge part of our team the past four years,” McCorkle said. “Lauren is a very dynamic player with the ball and a great passer. She has great pace and has been a tremendous student-athlete for our school. She does everything for us.”
