SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team defeated Eastern New Mexico 72-64 in Portales, N.M., behind
Lauren Holt tying a career-high with 23 points.
The Belles (3-3, 1-0) had three players score in double digits in scoring its highest point total of the season. Eastern New Mexico (0-5, 0-1) kept the pressure on ASU by forcing 14 turnovers and hitting eight 3-pointers.
“We played hard for 40 minutes and made some big plays at the end to finish the game,” head coach Sally Walling Brooks said after the game. “We needed this win and we fought for it.”
ENMU jumped out to a 20-11 lead nine minutes into the game before the Belles went on a 21-8 run to close out the half.
Haylee Oliver sparked the run with two 3-pointers to give ASU a 32-28 lead at the break.
The Belles dominated the second half in the paint scoring 26 points compared to just 12 for ENMU. Holt scored 15 of her game-high 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She also added four assists and two blocks.
Leah LeMaire scored 12 of her season high 18 points in the second half while Cassi Steagall was the third Belle in double figures scoring with 11 points. Oliver finished with eight points and a season high 10 rebounds.
Hannah Altheide was Eastern New Mexico's high scorer with 14 points. Nelsa Peterson chipped in 12 points.
ASU shot 47 percent from the field to only 39 percent for ENMU.
The Belles will have host West Texas A&M for their LSC home opener on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The game will be the Alzheimer's Awareness game. T-shirts will be for sale and donations will be accepted with all proceeds going towards the Pat Summitt Foundation.
