Rams Drop Non-Conference Game at Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK – The Angelo State men's basketball team took an 83-71 non-conference loss against Lubbock Christian on Monday at the Rip Griffin Center.

The Rams (3-6) slip to 2-3 in games outside of Lone Star Conference play and will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday with a road game at Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa. Lubbock Christian (7-5) improved to 6-0 at home with the win and evened the season series with the Rams after ASU had taken a 71-65 win over the Chaps at the Junell Center on Nov. 10.

Antonio Dye led the Rams with 22 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field, including hitting a career-high four 3-pointers in the game. Dakota Rawls added 14 points a game after scoring 25 points against Texas A&M-Commerce, while Chris Talkington had 12 points which is just below his season average of 13.3 points per game. Talkington, Dye and Rawls each led the Rams with seven rebounds.

Jovan Austin contributed 10 points and led the Rams with three assists, while Bryan Hammond nine in the effort.

Angelo State held LCU to no points in the first three and a half minute of play, but the Chaps would grab their first lead of the game (7-6) off a Jamaal Crayton 3-pointer and would surrender the advantage the rest of the night. Austin made a basket to cut the Chaps' lead to 51-45 with a little over 13 minutes to play, while Hammond hit a layup for the Rams to take the margin to 65-56 with 7:30 to play. A Rawls layup brought Angelo State as close as it would get at 65-58 with seven minutes to play.

Jevvon Hunter led Lubbock Christian with 19 points, while Jabril Durham added 18 and Anthony Brancato scored 17. The Chaps went 11-for-24 from beyond the arc, while ASU made seven of its 21 3-point shots. The Rams shot 27-for-60 from the field and scored four points over their season average, but allowed LCU to score 13 points more than ASU was allowing opponents this season.
