SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State women's basketball dropped its second straight game at home and third overall Saturday night as the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs pulled out a 54-53 win over the Belles at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center despite a career-high 10 points from freshman
Devon Wilde.
Wilde shot 2-of-4 from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line as the Wall native scored in double digits for the first time all season.
Haylee Oliver led the Belles with 12 points and had a personal-best five assists.
Lauren Holt joined Oliver and Wilde in double figures with 10 points and
Paige Weishuhn had 10 rebounds for Angelo State (11-11, 9-7 Lone Star Conference) but the Belles could not overcome their 16
th straight loss to the Lady Buffs (14-8, 12-4 LSC).
It looked like ASU would break their streak as Belles fought all the way going down the wire with West Texas A&M as the game was tied 11 times before Angelo State seem to take control holding a five-point advantage with 7:12 left in the second half.
The Lady Buffs would respond and regain the lead, 50-49, with 1:35 left to play, but a jumper by Oliver would give the Belles the lead again with under a minute left to play.
West Texas A&M followed with a Ashley Leven jumper with the shot clock running down that gave the Lady Buffs the lead for good, 52-51, with 19 seconds left in the game as the Belles would turn it over on the following possession.
After a pair of West Texas A&M free throws ASU made a layup at the buzzer that would set the final score.
Prior before this week, the Belles had been undefeated at home during league play but lost to Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday before tonight's game.
Kenisha Harris had a game-high 17 points for West Texas A&M and Leven added 15 and nine rebounds. The last time that the Lady Buffs lost to ASU was in 2005.
Angelo State will travel to face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday with tip-off slated for 6 p.m. The Belles defeated the Javelinas on Jan. 4 earlier this year.
