SAN ANGELO, Texas – Hanif Nixon-Hughes tied a career-high with 25 points including nine free throws that helped the Angelo State men's basketball team to a huge win over Incarnate Word, 68-65, at the Lone Star Conference Game of the Week  playing at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center on Saturday night.

The Rams (11-15, 4-12) held off a late charge by Incarnate Word (16-10, 11-7) with two free throws by Nixon-Hughes with six seconds left. The Cardinals' Shaun Umeh turned the ball over after the free throws to seal the victory for Angelo State.

Incarnate Word shot 45 percent in both halves but committed 13 turnovers in the second half. The Rams struggled in the first half, but kept it close with 11 free throws. The Cardinals went up 36-31 at the half in part to Umeh's 12 first half points. Nixon-Hughes scored 12 of his 25 points in the first half.

In the second half, LaDonn Huckaby and Keenen Coleman hit two three-pointers but the consistent scoring came from Nixon-Hughes. He hit four of five from the field and made five of nine from the charity stripe. The Rams on the night hit 22 of 33 free throws which ties the second-most hit in a game this season.

The Rams now are 9-4 at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center and the win keeps their chances alive for a spot in the LSC Basketball Championship. Angelo State will play its final home game of the season on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. as it faces Tarleton State.
