SAN ANGELO, Texas – Paige Weishuhn became the 17
th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points, but the Angelo State women's team lost at home to the University of the Incarnate Word, 66-49, at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center on Saturday.
Weishuhn, who came into the contest needing seven points to reach the milestone, had 21 on the night earning her fourth 20-point performance of the season. The senior achieved the record on a three-point basket at the 13:11 mark in the first half.
The Belles (11-13, 9-9 Lone Star Conference) however could not hang on to an early 11-point lead as the Cardinals (13-12, 8-11 LSC) handed ASU its fifth consecutive loss.
Angelo State led 19-8 early in the opening half before UIW rallied back thanks to a zone defense that stifled the Belles. Both teams would go into the locker room at the half with ASU clinging to a 28-27 lead.
The Cardinals continued to keep pace never with the Belles during the second half with both teams staying within two points of each other. UIW would take control of the game for good after an Ashlyn Green jumper with 10:40 remaining gave the Cardinals a 39-36 lead.
That advantage would soon balloon to 11 with just over four minutes to play, 51-40. ASU would trim it down to seven, 51-44, with 2:38 left to play, but the Cardinals would respond with a 6-2 run that would put it out of reach.
Cara Gorton had a career-high 12 points for Angelo State to join Weishuhn in double figures. The Belles as a team shot .500 in the first half, but struggle in the second hitting only .286 of their attempts.
Jocelyn Jarmon had a game-high 23 points for Incarnate Word, who had lost to the Belles at home earlier this season. Jarmon also added nine rebounds and five steals.
Chloe Wallace added 15 points for the Cardinals followed by Green with 12.
Angelo State will play its final regular season game on Wednesday as they host Tarleton State with tip-off beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Belles will honor Weishuhn, their lone senior as she plays in her final home game.
