SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team stayed with No. 7 Tarleton State all game but were unable to pull off the upset as the Texans won, 67-61, Wednesday night in Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
No. 7 Tarleton State (23-4, 14-3) used 53 percent shooting on the night and 20 points from the charity stripe to outlast the Rams (11-16, 4-13). Angelo State had cut the lead to two points with 2:56 to go in the game but a turnover and four-straight free throws by the Texans sealed the victory.
Much like in the first game between the two Lone Star Conference opponents, the Rams were able to hang with the Texans until Tarleton State went on a run.
Angelo State had a lead at the 8:32 mark of the first half but Tarleton State outscored the Rams by a score of 13-2 a six minute period.
Keenen Coleman hit two free throws at the 2:19 mark in the first half to slow down the Texans' run.
The halftime lead would have been 10 points but
Javae King-Gilchrist hit an acrobatic layup with one second left to cut the Texans lead to 35-27.
The second half started with the Texans extending its lead to 13 points before the Rams hit their own run.
Dakota Rawls hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead down to six points at the 11:44 mark.
The lead would fluctuate between four points and nine points the rest of the way but the Rams would get no closer.
Tarleton State used 13 second half free throws and 18 points from Fabian Wilson to take the contest. Three other Texans scored in double digits.
The Rams were led with 21 points from Coleman and 19 points from King-Gilchrist.
Joey Lenox scored six points and
LaDonn Huckaby added five point in their final game in Stephens Arena.
Angelo State will now play Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Commerce with a berth in the Lone Star Conference Championship on the line. The Rams must beat Texas A&M-Commerce and have Tarleton State defeat Abilene Christian to earn a spot.
