COMMERCE, Texas – Leah LeMaire scored a career-high 18 points for the Angelo State women's basketball team, but a late three-pointer by Texas A&M-Commerce's Danielle Dixon was the difference down the stretch as the Lions defeated the Belles, 64-61, on Saturday at the Field House in regular season finale for both teams.
The Lions (2-24, 1-19 Lone Star Conference) won their first conference game in over two seasons since they defeated ASU on Dec. 14, 2009 in Commerce. Texas A&M-Commerce also snapped a 21-game overall losing streak.
Angelo State drops to 12-14 on the year and 10-10 in league play. It is only the second losing regular season in Belles' head coach Sally Brooks' 12-year tenure at ASU, matching the record of the 2009-10 team.
The Belles fell to 4-8 on the road this season, despite a career-night from LeMaire. The sophomore guard shot 6-of-9 from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. The Corpus Christi native also added two assists and two rebounds to her stat line.
Haylee Oliver (16 points) and
Paige Weishuhn (13 points) joined LeMaire in double-digits with Oliver shooting 4-of-10 from downtown. The freshman from San Saba tied
Morgan Youngblood with a team-leading 5 rebounds.
The difference in the game was on the boards as the Lions grabbed 24 offensive rebounds compared to 24 total caroms by the Belles. Those 24 offensive boards led to 16 second-chance points for the Lions and gave them 34-10 points-in-the-paint advantage over ASU.
Texas A&M-Commerce looked to be control in the opening half as they held a 23-13 lead over the Belles at the 2:41 mark, but Angelo State went on a 11-0 run to end first period going into the locker up one, 24-23.
In the second half, ASU looked to pull away from the Lions as they lead by eight, 45-37, with 10:16 left to play after a LeMaire free throw. It was the Belles largest lead of the game.
The Lions responded with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to retake the lead, 47-45 with 7:53 left in the game. After that point the game would be tied five times with seven lead changes down the stretch.
The game would be tied for the ninth time at 61-61 with exactly a minute left to play after two free throws by LeMaire. On the other end, Apreia Booker, the Lions' lone senior who was celebrated tonight, found Dixon who knocked down her first three of the game with 39 seconds left.
The Belles had two chances to tie in the final 19 seconds, but Oliver missed on both attempts.
Breanna Harris had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Texas A&M-Commerce. La'Tisha Hearne added 12 off the bench for the Lions.
Angelo State had an opportunity to become the No. 4 seed for the LSC Championships next week in Allen with a win, but regardless of today's outcome they will still play Cameron on Thursday, March 1 at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
