AUSTIN – The Angelo State golf team carded a 348 (+64) first-round score at the St. Edward's Women's Invitational on Monday. The Belles finished the day in 13th place at the par-71, 6,060-yard course at Grey Rock Golf Course.
The field dealt with less than ideal conditions as it rained throughout the opening round of the 36-hole tournament.
“Honestly we haven't seen the sun all day and the wind was probably blowing 10 to 15 (MPH) maybe not quite that much,” Rambelles head coach Kathleen Price said. “But it's just been kind of cold and we just never go into a routine. The greens didn't hold at all and all of the girls were frustrated with that.
“The course played very difficult for us. From what I heard, not too many people were having fun at least in the groups that we were in.”
Sophomore
Courtney Rutledge was the Belles' top scorer for the day with a first-day total of 82 (41-41) and was tied for 28
th.
Abby Bobo had a two-shot improvement after the turn to finish with 45-43 – 88 total.
Krista Czarnecki and
Ashley Bartholomew were a shot off from Bobo and tied for 62
nd while Maury McComick rounded out the team total and was in a tie for 67
th place.
Makenzie Stone and
Taylor Griffin also competed for ASU and were in 71
st and 82
nd place respectively.
Bartholomew played in the top five for the first time in her career as a Belle and after some struggles, ended the day very well.
“Ashley ended up playing in the top five for the first time,” Price said. “She started off on No. 9 and birdied her first hole and the very last she played she birdied as well.
“She struggled in the sand today. She hit the ball as well as I've seen her hit it in a long time, but she struggled in the sand.”
Tarleton State currently stands in first place at the conclusion of the day with a overall score of 300 (+16). The TexAnns Sharon Lau shot a one-over-72 to lead in the medalist standings.
The field will finish the invitational tomorrow with Price hoping that her team learns to adjust from today's conditions.
“I am disappointed in what the scoring turned out to be, but at the same time I am anxious to see how they can respond to this and take it and use it for something later,” Price said.
