McKinnon, Reyna Honored as LSC Diamond Players of the Week

LSC Release

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State's Quaid McKinnon and Rick Reyna have been honored as Diamond Players of the Week by the Lone Star Conference after helping lead the Rams to a four-game sweep of Ouachita Baptist last weekend to open the season.

Renya, a senior from Mission, was named Pitcher of the Week after leading Angelo State to a season-opening win with a 12 strikeout performance where he went six innings of scoreless baseball against Ouachita Baptist. The senior right-handed pitcher allowed only three hits and held. OBU batters to a .143 batting average. His 12 strikeouts tied an ASU single-game record first set by Sam Janca in 2010.

“He attacked, and attacked and attacked the zone,” said ASU head coach Kevin Brooks of Reyna, after the game. “That's what we have been trying to get him to do. To see him do that for five-plus innings there was great. He has great stuff and he just has to trust it.”

McKinnon, a junior transfer from Paradise Valley Community College, was named the Hitter of the Week after leading Angelo State with eight hits and six RBI in 13 at-bats as the Rams swept Ouachita Baptist in the four-game series. The Phoenix, Ariz., native is hitting .615 and has scored seven runs through the first four games of the ASU baseball season.

“While I don't think he's going to hit .615 this year, I think he is going to be a very dominant hitter as we go throughout the season,” Brooks said. “He has worked really hard in the weight room and put on 10-15 pounds since he got here and continues to improve his strength. I think his power numbers will go up as the season goes on. He has the ability to drive the baseball.”

The Rams top the conference batting standings with a .353 average and are second in pitching with a team 1.20 ERA. Angelo State pitching leads the conference with 40 strikeouts through the first week of play and the hitters top the home run category with three.

ASU is back in action at 4 p.m. today against St. Mary's at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio. Follow the action at www.twitter.com/AngeloSports and www.facebook.com/AngeloStateSports.
