Belles Breeze to Series Sweep of Mustangs

Final Box

SAN ANGELO, Texas – On a breezy Sunday afternoon at the ASU Softball Complex, the Angelo State softball team earned a 7-4 victory over Midwestern State to complete the series sweep during First Community Federal Credit Union Military Appreciation Weekend. The No. 2 Rambelles are now 9-0 in league play and own sole possession of first place.

“Midwestern is a great team and we're fortunate to be able to get three quality wins this weekend,” Angelo State head coach Travis Scott said. “For how hard the wind was blowing today, I thought we were patient at the plate and had a lot of good at bats.”

Elsamartina Apo and Kacie Easley led the Belles' (25-3, 9-0 LSC) offensive attack in Sunday's victory. Apo went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and raised her season batting average to .500, while Easley smacked two doubles and drove in a game high four RBIs.

Claire Molina toed the rubber for Angelo Stated and improved to 14-2 on the season. The senior struck out eight and scattered just four hits, but allowed six walks.

“Claire had another great outing for us,” Scott said. “She struggled a little early trying to get a feeling for the strike zone, but she really pitched a good game.”

The Mustangs (12-16, 2-7 LSC) took advantage of a hitter-friendly zone, as they were able to score three runs on one hit in the top of the first. The Belles cut into the deficit in the bottom half, as Apo hit an RBI single past the outstretched glove of the second baseman to make a 3-1 game.

Angelo State's big inning came in the second, scoring four runs on two hits. With the bases loaded, Lauren Smith was pegged and earned a painful RBI. One batter later, Easley hit a three-run double off the base of the wall in left-center to give the Rambelles a 5-3 lead.

The Belles scored runs in the fifth and sixth thanks to RBI doubles from Apo and Easley, which helped secure a 7-4 victory.

Angelo State returns to the diamond March 23-24, for a three-game series again LSC rival No. 19 West Texas A&M in Canyon.
