SAN ANGELO, Texas –The Angelo State softball team had three different players hit home runs, while
Claire Molina tossed a complete game en route to a 9-1 run-rule victory over Lone Star Conference foe Cameron at the ASU Softball Complex on Friday. The No. 8 Rambelles improved to 15-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference with the win.
“This was a great way to open up conference play,” Angelo State head coach
Travis Scott said. “Cameron had opportunities to score a lot of runs in the first few innings, but Claire did a great job of limiting it to just one run.”
The Aggies (8-8, 0-1 LSC) would score its lone run in the top of the first inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Molina nearly pitched her way out of the jam by getting Micah Foutch to chase at a breaking ball in the dirt for strike three. However, Foutch was able to reach on a dropped third strike, which scored Claren Hurlbut.
It did not take long for the Belles to tie the game, as
Lauren Smith took the first pitch she saw over the bleachers in left field to tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom half. An inning later, ASU would tack on another run.
Elsamartina Apo hit a double to left field, and would eventually score on a
Chelsey Walters' single.
The hits kept coming for Apo. The senior - who leads the team in batting average (.477) and on-base percentage (.641) – launched a three-run bomb in the third inning to break the game open.
Morgan Spearman and
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti would score on Apo's second home run of the season to make it a 5-1 lead.
“Elsa had two big hits to the opposite field against a very good pitcher,” Scott said. “She's a smart hitter and knows how to work deep into the count.”
Brittney Davis hit the final home run of the game for the Rambelles. After
Carly Peters singled to lead off the fourth, the Manor native hit her first career home run to centerfield.
“I didn't think it was out, but it felt amazing,” Davis said. “The team and coaches have been working with me on my hitting, so it's always great to see results.”
The Belles final runs would come in the bottom of the fifth from
Luz'Ce Baca and Walters to run-rule the Aggies in five innings.
Molina retired the final seven batters in order and improved to 8-2 on the season. In 5.0 innings of work, the senior struck out three and allowed just one run on seven hits.
The two teams return to the ASU Softball Complex for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
