SAN ANGELO, Texas – No. 8 Angelo State split its season series against No. 2 St. Mary's after an 8-4 non-conference loss to the Rattlers on Wednesday at Foster Field.
Angelo State (27-11, 11-5 Lone Star Conference) used seven pitchers in the game that followed a 6-5 win over St. Mary's (32-7) back on Feb. 7 in San Antonio. ASU, which holds an 11-6 all-time lead over St. Mary's, trailed 3-0 after the first inning and never led in the game.
“We didn't come out and throw strikes and that wasn't a good tone to start the game,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “We really just didn't play that well all around. We made some mistakes fielding that we usually don't and we weren't able to bring in runners early in the game that could have made this an entirely different game.”
Angelo State finished the game with eight hits, while the Rattlers had 12.
Toby Semler extended his hitting streak to seven with a fifth inning double. It was his team leading 50th hit of the season and his 11th double.
Andrew LaCombe and
Doug Snover each had two hits in the game, while
Brett Parsons and
Ryan Greer drove in runs. Snover, who had a fourth-inning single to score
Lee Neumann, is now hitting .315 for the season and has reached base in 11 straight games.
Greer led off the game with his seventh double of the season, but would turn out to be the first of six Rams that would be stranded on base.
Jake Feckley (5-2) claims the loss for Angelo State after getting only two outs in the first inning. Feckley struck out one, walked two and gave up two hits.
Michael Lange,
James Conlee,
Jake Albert,
Austin Church,
Matt Rechkemmer and Michael Weatherly also saw time on the mound. Rechkemmer, a senior from Lubbock, had the most impressive outing by striking out five and allowing only one hit in 3.0 innings.
Derek Moczygemba (4-2) earned the win for St. Mary's after striking out four and managing six hits by limiting his walk total to one. Jeremy Narvaez got the game's final nine outs for the Rattlers without surrendering a run to the comeback minded Rams.
Billy Richard and Esteban Raygoza each had two RBI to lead the Rattlers' offense, while Brandon Bates had a three-hit performance. Raygoza drove in his runs in the first inning with a single that went off Feckley's foot and into left field.
Angelo State returns to conference action at 3 p.m. on Friday against Tarleton State in Stephenville. The Rams and Texans will continue their series at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a doubleheader and then conclude the series with a single game starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
“This game is behind us and we will return to practice tomorrow to get better and then head over to Tarleton having to play better than the way we did tonight to get the wins that we have to have,” Brooks said.
