SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State softball team welcomes Texas A&M-Kingsville to the ASU Softball Complex this weekend for the final regular season series of the year. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m. while Saturday's single game will recognize the Rambelles' seniors prior to the 1 p.m. first pitch.
Seniors
Elsamartina Apo,
Claire Molina,
Jasmaine Moore and
DeeshanaLynn Tafiti will be recognized along with junior
Chelsey Walters who graduates in May and will begin chiropractic school in Dallas next fall.
“We want to send our seniors out the right way this weekend,” Angelo State head coach
Travis Scott said. “They have given everything they had to the program and we'll certainly miss them.”
The No. 15 Rambelles are coming off a 7-3 victory over Abilene Christian on Tuesday which crowned them the 2012 Lone Star Conference Champion. With the win, Angelo State improved to 39-8 overall and 20-4 in league play.
The Belles have a balanced attack, as they are hitting.340 as a team, while holding their opponents to .246 average. Apo has paced ASU all season with a .450 average and a .576 on-base percentage.
Kacie Easley is the other Belles player hitting above .400 this season. The junior catcher is batting .414 with 12 doubles, nine home runs and has 47 RBIs to her name. Angelo State's high-powered offense has produced 352 runs this season and limited its opponents to just 162. A key to the success may be its patience at the plate. The Belles have drawn 169 walks this season and surrendered just 92, sparking a .436 team on-base percentage.
A big part of ASU's winning tradition is the consistency of its starting pitching. The Belles roll out two starting lefties in Molina and
Mary Kate McKay. In the circle, Molina (21-4) has thrown 149.2 innings and limited her opponents to a .241 team average. The senior owns a 2.62 earned run average and has a conference best 21 wins on the year. Meanwhile, McKay has logged 151.0 innings this season and boasts a 2.55 ERA. The sophomore has allowed just 36 walks this season while striking out 115.
Ricki Rothbauer is in her second season as head coach of the Javelinas and has led them to a 17-30 overall mark and 5-19 in conference play. Rose Stubbs has started all 47 games for TAMUK and is batting a team-best .348 this season. The junior shortstop is slugging .424 with three doubles, three triples and a home run this year. Texas A&M-Kingsville's top-two throwers are Denise Arnold and Lindsey Brown. Arnold (7-15) has thrown 140.0 innings and has a 4.20 ERA, while Brown (9-8) is limiting opponents to a .258 batting average in 116.1 innings pitched.
The two programs met three times last season, and Angelo State won all three contests. With the sweep, ASU now leads the all-time series 28-10 against the Javelinas.
