REGIONAL RANKINGS

SAN ANGELO, Texas –
A year after missing the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship all together, the Angelo State Rams charge into this season's tournament as the top seed and on a seven-game winning streak.

No. 12 Angelo State (36-14, 20-8 LSC), which is hosting the tournament for the first time, is 24-4 overall and 14-2 in LSC games at Foster Field this season. ASU is ranked third in the NCAA South Central Region's poll coming into the tournament.

The Rams finished their 50-game regular season with a team batting average of .321 and with seven players over .300. ASU pitching struck out 329 batters while only walking 170 in 393.2 innings of work this season. The team outscored its opponents 352-213 and stole 96 bases compared to only 29 steals by opponents.

“I think we are playing really well right now but baseball can turn on a dime,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. “We just have to continue being the better team that day like we have been doing most of the season. We have to keep our intensity up and come out focused.”

ASU will play its first game of the tournament at 7 p.m. on Saturday against the sixth-seeding Abilene Christian Wildcats. The Rams swept ACU last weekend at Foster field by a combined score of 46-7 and have won the last seven games played dating back to a three-game sweep last season in Abilene.

ANGELO STATE HITTERS

Lee Neumann led the Rams with a .398 batting average, 18 doubles, eight triples and 122 total bases. The junior from Brenham ranks seventh all-time in batting average in program history, while his eight triples are a single-season record at ASU. He also finished with 70 hits which ties Toby Semler for the team and conference lead, and his six home runs ties him with Ryan Greer for the team lead. The center fielder also stole 16 bases and did not commit an error with 96 putouts. Neumann's double total currently ranks him ninth all-time for a single season with Steven Allred (2007) in the program lead with 28.

“He has steadily improved all season,” said Brooks of Neumann who is currently on a 12-game hitting streak and a 20-game reached base streak. “It shows his work ethic and dedication to the game. He is a very special player but is nowhere near the type of player that he has the capability to become.”

Semler finished the regular season with a .372 average, 49 singles, 16 doubles, three home runs and two triples in his senior year. The Mansfield native enters the LSC Baseball Championship with 35 RBI and 31 runs scored. Semler is currently on a six-game hitting streak and has 22 multi-hit games this season and 10 multi-RBI games. His longest hitting streak of the season was snapped two weeks ago against Cameron at 12 games.

“He is just a steady and consistent hitter,” said Brooks of Semler. “He has gotten better as the regular season came to a close and is really swinging the bat well. You have to have players like Toby to win and we are really lucky he's out there performing the way he is for us.”

Greer enters the postseason with a team leading 52 RBI after driving in 12 runs in last weekend's sweep of Abilene Christian. The junior left fielder from Arizona completed his first regular season in an ASU uniform with a .355 batting average, 40 singles, eight doubles, five triples and six home runs. Three of those home runs came last weekend in the ACU series with two being pulled to right field and one driven the other way into the right-field bullpen. Greer led the team and conference with 26 stolen bases and scored 43 runs. His five triples this year ranks him only behind Neumann's eight and Drew Caraway's seven in 2007 in single-season triple totals. Greer is creeping closer to the single-season records in RBI with Ronnie Gaines tenth all-time with 59 RBI in 2006. Keith Towne holds the record with 86 RBI in the 2009 season.

“Ryan gets big hit after big hit,” said Brooks of Greer. “It's incredible how many huge two-out hits he's delivered for us this season. He leads the conference in RBI despite not hitting in traditional RBI spot in the lineup. He just continues to drive in runs and score runs.”

Quaid McKinnon hit .337 during the regular season with 40 singles, 12 doubles, three triples and 37 RBI. McKinnon, a junior from Arizona, hit two home runs this season – both coming last weekend in the series opener against ACU. He currently ranks fourth all-time with 34 walks this season with Trey Carter (2009) holding the single-season walks record with 52. McKinnon has 387 putouts at first base and only four errors and has scored 44 runs coming into the tournament.

Andrew LaCombe holds the single-season record for throwing out 24 opponents trying to steal on defensively as a catcher, while he is hitting .333 through his first 144 at-bats this season. The junior from Southlake has 35 singles, nine doubles, three home runs and triple. He has played in every game this season and has 31 RBI and has scored 34 runs.

“He has handled the pitchers great all season and is our emotional leader,” said Brooks of LaCombe. “We wouldn't be where we are at without him.”

Brett Parsons enters the LSC Baseball Championship with a .353 batting average through his first 136 at-bats this season. Playing primarily as a designated hitter this season, the senior from The Woodlands has four home runs, nine doubles, 34 singles and 38 RBI.

Doug Snover has started all 50 games at second base this season for the Rams and has a team-leading 131 assists. Snover, who is playing in his first season at ASU after missing last year with a broken collarbone, is hitting .307 with 35 singles, 12 doubles, three home runs and a triple. He is second on the team and in the conference with 20 stolen bases and has scored 42 runs.

Zach Cohen missed the first eight games of the season but started and played in the final 42. Cohen, a senior short stop from Houston, has 24 singles, seven doubles, a home run and 19 RBI this season. He is second on the team with 111 defensive assists.

Tate Allison has hit four home runs, eight doubles and 15 singles this year while driving in 22 runs for the Rams. The senior, who is originally from Andrews, moved to Cairo, Egypt and then to Midland, has started 42 games this season.

ANGELO STATE PITCHERS

Michael Lange, a junior from Nebraska, finished the regular season with a 7-0 record through 10 starts. The right hander walked only 10 batters in 54.2 innings and struck out 40. His seven wins this season currently has him at 10th all-time for a single-season. Cody Broussard holds the single-season record with 12 wins in the 2007 season. Lange, who also has three early-season appearances from the bullpen, comes into the LSC Baseball Championship with a 3.46 earned run average.

James Conlee (6-1) moved from the bullpen last season to the starting rotation this year with ease. The junior from Georgetown has struck out 32 batters in 58.2 innings and has not lost a game in over a month. Jake Feckley (5-2) enters the postseason with 45 strikeouts to his name through 55.2 innings of work in his sophomore season. The Wylie native has walked only 14 batters.

Rick Reyna (5-4) leads the Rams with 57 strikeouts and 12 starts this season. The senior from Mission has thrown 61.0 innings and has allowed only 11 extra base hits. Matt Rechkemmer (2-0) is coming off a strong start against ACU and has made four starts. The senior from Lubbock has struck out 15, walked 10 and managed through 20 hits in 26.0 innings.

A strength of the Rams this season has been in the bullpen with Jake Albert, Austin Church and Michael Weatherly leading the way. Church (3-2) leads ASU with 25 appearances and has limited opponents to a .220 batting average through 37.1 innings of work. The junior from Missouri has a 3.13 ERA entering the tournament.

Michael Weatherly (5-2) became the single-season saves record holder for ASU with after closing the door on ACU last Saturday. Weatherly has 42 strikeouts through 31.1 innings, a statistic that puts his strikeouts per nine innings at 12.06. That mark is second all-time behind Bozeman's 12.39 in the 2011 season. The junior from Mesquite is limiting opponents to a .221 batting average and leads ASU with a 2.87 ERA.

Albert has made 20 appearances this season to provide depth. The sophomore from Conroe has struck out 19 and is limiting opponents to a .225 average.
