PUEBLO, Colo. – Theresa Sue earned her first All-American honor for the Rambelles and picked up two points in the team race at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held in Pueblo, Colo., on Thursday.
“Today overall was a day of mixed emotions,” head coach James Reid said. “We had some good things and some solid things. We really didn't have anything bad. The ones who didn't advance to finals still had good marks. I am not disappointed on how we competed and I thought we got after it today.”
Sue used a jump of 19'-3.25” (5.87m) to secure her first All-American honor of her career. Sue's mark ended up being the seventh best of the competition. She is the first All-American in the women's long jump since Aisha Adams and Chrystal Ruiz earned the honor in 2010.
“We are extremely excited about what Theresa accomplished today,” Reid said. “She was disappointed she didn't jump father but to get on the award stand her first time at nationals is a big accomplishment. I am proud of her and how she represented Angelo State.”
The third time was the charm for Isidro Garcia as the junior advanced to the 400-meter final at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. After missing out on the final of the 400-meters his freshman and sophomore seasons, the junior set a new personal-best time of 46.86 to make the final. The Carthage native clocked a 26.18 in the 200-meter and finished the day in 15th place with a score of 2,852 points. Day two begins at 11 a.m. local time tomorrow morning.
Patrick Hunter wasn't able to get a big jump in the men's long jump after battling an injury prior to the meet. The junior was able to record a mark of 22'-1.50” (6.74m) and placed 18th overall. He will now focus on the men's triple jump that will be contested on Saturday.
